Seems I will have to replace a perfectly good sowester wateloo sea toilet because the flap vakves in the pump are no longer available. :(

If this really is the case, is there much difference between different makes other than the prices. For example, Jabasco €279, Talamax €152.

Any advice from the well informed on this topic?

£160 for the Jabsco here Jabsco Manual Toilet Twist 'n' Lock and I would not have any other make after 25 years of experience.

Haha, after 30 years experience I would never have another Jabsco. Lavac for me. I recently removed two Jabsco for a pair of Lavac. So much better. As liveaboards we use our loo about 5 times more often than a weekend sailor in the UK. With Jabsco I felt like a full time sanitation engineer. Always fixing something on them

The nice thing about a Jabsco is that you can pump the mechanism in flush mode whilst ‘unloading’. This keeps odours to a minimum. Can’t do that with a Lavac!

You can fit a small in-line electric pump on the flush water supply hose with a Lavac. Then the fill and empty are completely independent allowing ultimate convenience and reliability.

Talamax is a cheap Chinese Jabsco copy and don't think parts are interchangeable with the real thing. The Jabsco should be around 200 euros including VAT - much the same as in UK. You are only going to buy once!. As you see many prefer Lavac - different design and more expensive but much better for heavy use. Jabsco is fine though for "normal" (non liveaboard) use.

You can get a Jabsco full size bowl. I have one. However on many boats there is not enough room, the space having been designed to use the smaller size.
We had two with full sized bowls. This doesn't make the Jabsco pumping system any more reliable. In fact I believe the pitiful flushing system on Jabsco toilets works even less well on the larger bowl. Flush water doesn't even reach the front of the bowl unless you pump like a madman

Check the price for a refurbishment kit if you're tempted by anything but a Jabsco. I put an RM in Jissel and it was fine for years, but it was almost as cheap to put a whole new Jabsco in when the RM needed a bit of TLC.
Don't be tempted😅

I was. The Jabsco was still doing fine when I sold the boat several years later.

One thing to note when refurbishing a Jabsco is that you need to grip the pump shaft to unscrew something - can't remember what. Grip it high up under the handle 'cos the stainless steel is quite soft and anything that's gripping hard enough to undo it when it's being stubborn will mark it and if those marks are pulled through the top seal, the seal won't last. Discovered that about one minute too late - I've filed it as smooth as I can, so I'll see how long it survives.
