I have a Jeanneau 409 with a holding tank. The tank blocked recently, probably because we used luxury toilet paper. What make paper is least bad? I know many would say "nothing should go down that hasn't been eaten," but we would like to use toilet paper, if possible

We are using quick dissolving toilet paper for caravan systems. Quite expensive (so SWMBO keeps telling me) but appears to do the job, so to speak.

The cheapest soft paper as in Tesco and Asda etc is fine. It breaks down more quickly. No need to deposit in the bag hanging on the door handle:(

As said previously just buy the cheap toilet paper from any supermarket.
To check for suitability just put a sample of toilet paper in a glass of water and see how quickly it breaks up.
The quilted stuff remains in tact for ages and is no use on boats.

Use a "bidet" or "bum wash" hand held spray head then no need for any paper and one's bum is squeaky clean - no smearing or cling-ons - does a better job than any paper.
PS using baby wipes to "polish the rear end" and flushing them is a keel hauling offence on my boat

I now have visions of using a bum wash in a boat crashing through the swell and the consequences there of ;-)

Bum wash

I never cease to be amazed at the things one sees on these forums !

I met a chap who described how he and chums ' had a good night, vindaloo and a few pints ' when they were sailing the next day he was using the loo when they hit big waves; he described being bounced between the loo and the deckhead with horrible results, and from that day on hairy arses were banned on the boat.

When we had a holding tank I took a lesson from the flotilla boats we had been on in Greece and used a pedal bin for the disposal of used bumwipe. Now I know that many posters on here would respond with a yuk or similar, but it really does work well. There is NO SMELL, and its a clean and not unpleasant way to do things. Its simply a bit of a culture shock.

We never had a single blockage in 7 years

We had a blockage two days ago..... But not on the outlet side...

Sucked up some seaweed.

I love my jabsco... So simple to clear.

As for the output.... I think the secret is the rule of sheets.

No more than three at a time... Lots of pumping between wipes...

Cheap paper.

I agree. However, for the squeamish, I also provide those scented nappy sacks for the used papers. Tie it up and put in pedalbin.

For even more delicacy, we use individual nappy sacks per visit and put those in the bin. But deflate them before tying up, else the bin fills up quickly!

Can't say we've never had a blockage in our 30+ years of flotilla/charter, but you don't know what the tank is like when you take the boat over...

Mike.
