Many many thanks for all these replies. It's been a seriously useful thread for me this one.
To put your minds at rest (those of you who's minds weren't at rest).... I am a complete beginner to sailing (but not to the sea) and am doing everything I can (within tight budget) to ensure I'm as self reliant, competent and safe as possible when I begin my first season on the water in my own boat - later in the year.
I'm so excited about it that I keep dreaming about it... and going through my plans of actions should certain situations arise. When I realise I'm unsure of the best course of action, I ask. No harm in asking hey!
I've done the RYA competent crew, the RYA power boat level 2, the RYA VHF course and am about to take the Dayskipper exam. My first day at sea in my own boat is going to be with the former owner of the boat (who has many, many years experience) and a good friend who happens to be an officer in the merchant navy. As a result of this thread, as well as having a much better idea about what to do in certain situations, I'm also now going to be signing up for Sea Start.
I'm paranoid about engines failing and am doing my level best to ensure that mine is running perfectly (as certain forum members I'm PM'ing will attest to, thanks!!, you know who you are), but I'm also aware that regardless of how well maintained these things are - sometimes (usually at the most inopportune moments) they go wrong.
PS.

I'm a web designer by trade, with some experience in creating and maintaining web forums. I put together yacht forum because there's currently no (that I've found) full featured forums for UK yachties. *This* forum is fantastic in terms of number and quality of users, but it's a bit dated and has us all posting in a bit of a free-for-all single forum.
Linking to your own web site in your .sig is really very standard behaviour.
