Let me know how you get on. Would be interested in route you are planning and how you get on with timing with respect to tide. You are aware of the bl**dy great roundabout that has been put in recently.
The flat/response view has left me confused as to weather you are "talking" to me or Salty sea dog. I will be starting from Titchmarsh, hopefully an early morning start but still with some light.
Clear Pye End leave South Cork well to Port (pots + very shallow ) Medusa, North East Gunfleet & the Long Sand Hd to Stbd skirting around the new round-about, no probs
With light, and your draft, no problem at all leaving straight fromTitchmarsh.... as per MrCramp's comment.... purely an observation over leaving in the dark.... not sure about the Bradwell suggestion above.... it would seem to be a little out of the way... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Other than that, Sailorman's route looks good, but personally, i'd go up Black Deep and through Foulgers Gat.... especially with your minimal draft.... but depends on whether you can be bothered to make the nav a little more challenging or not.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I'd suggest leave TM three hours before LW. On the way out past the sands turn to starboard at High Hill - No 4 and set course directly for Medusa or South Cork, take the inside route past Sunk and go virtually due south to fisherman's Gat
throgh that and its a straight run to inside the Goodwins and straight to Dover. Miss out Ramsgate altogether.
Should do it in one tide and don't hesitate to use the engine to keep passage speed up in this bit. Once you're in the Channel you've got lots of room to tack etc. Beachy Head at night is fascinating.
Take two friends and do it in one hit.
I'm told one can drag the dog for a few minutes to do No2s and its jolly good exercise for them!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
thanks for the info re the roundabout! i will let you know how i get on. will beinterested to see your passage plan when you post it. looks like i have a lift in date of next tuesday so if the weathers OK i will make a start!
Lots of good advice here, especially about missing out Ramsate. Cross the Thames shallows on a rising tide to time the stream turning just nicely to whizz you down from the Elbow to Dover.
Unlike Spuddy, I'd go straight into the Eastern entrance. Just call up on Ch74 a couple of miles off, Port Control will ask you to call again when nearer and will direct you as appropriate (they are really helpful).
It may mean a couple of minutes wait just N of the entrance for ferries to clear, but it's much quicker than going round to Westen entrance and much more comfortable too, if its blowing from SW to S.
Beachy Head - great in the right conditions! I made a gross error once of going round in a rising 6, wind over tide, at springs - and the overfalls were something else! I still can't believe how quickly that sea got up.
Stupid - yes, but taught me a lesson I'll not forget, and have had no trouble there since! Well worth dipping into Eastbourne if the breeze is piping up and waiting for the blow to pass. Whatever the conditions it's a tidal gate so well worth making a note and timing your leg to pass near slack.
