Titanic

Not read that one but this one is very compelling!

Titanic: The ship that never sank by Robin Gardiner

The evidence, is extremely convincing that it was the Olympic that sank after a name swap when both ships were in Harland and Wolf's shipyard side by side.

From a boating perspective, the early chapters about the Olympic collision with an RN cruiser in the Solent is very enlightening. In those days, the order "helm aport" meant turn to starboard! Dating from the time when ships were tiller steered. Unfortunately the matelot at the wheel of the cruiser turned the wheel to the direction of the order and there was a huge crash! But the RN were cleared of the blame and it was the captain of the hapless Olympic that took the wrap! The convention was changed soon after!

I thought the name switch theory had been pretty well debunked? Apart from the obvious physical differences between the ships on the upper decks they had completely different colour schemed interiors...... givevn the scale, grandeur and level of fit of these ships welding up all the steel and swapping all the carpets and wallpaper over would have been a bit of a challenge. Not just changing the plates!

That little bit of tattle was disproved when they dived on the Olympic .

Her expansion joint at the lower end was round and was modified after the Titanics sinking.

The Olympic received one of the Titanic's propellor shafts at this point. This delayed the Titanic's launch and maiden voyage. If it hadn't been for the Olympic's collision with HMS Hawke then the Titanic would have launched on time and never met that iceberg, thus denying 21st century Belfast a lucrative tourist attraction.

Olympic was hull number 400, Titanic was 401. When Bob Ballard found the Titanic wreck the number 401 can be seen stamped into one of her huge bronze propellers.
