So any recommendations as to who to consider.

NB this will NOT be Y Yachts this year !

More importanly for those who had to make a claim what firms have been difficult to deal with, after all that is the main reason for having Insurance.

I'd spin the question and ask who has been easy.

I had a £2000 hit and run claim last year.

Gave GJW brief details on the phone, filled out a REALLY simple online form, they knew the first company who quoted so I didn't need multi-repair quotes, job done, payment made, I just had to send the repair company my excess.

Really couldn't have been easier plus the policy is for an agreed value for the boat.

I have just handled a 13K claim for a client who is with Amlyn .
I can honestly say that they have been absolutely brilliant with my clients claim , they did send a surveyor to look at the damage , while on site he made a decision and the new drive was ordered more or less within a day .

Saga is a broker who take hefty commissions so there might be better brokers around or look to buy direct unless you can make them agree to reduce the gap by reducing their commission.

So is Y! In fact, almost all of them are brokers for Lloyds underwriters - so they are all taking a commission - that's how they earn their living!

I am with Y because they've been good with me so far (but no claims). Pants were 30% more expensive. GJW and others considerably cheaper.

I may not stay with Y again next year because someone I know (I've posted about this before on here) had a total loss claim mid-Atlantic this year and Y were not very helpful at all.

Craftinsure have offered good price and service over I guess 8 or 9 years now.
3 claims in that time, 3rd party at fault, my (paid skipper) at fault and random damage by flotsam in the marina. All claims have been simplicity itself with personal service.
JFM said the cover was OK but criticised their ability to supply a "similar craft" in the case of total loss - at their discretion. Not a problem to me for the price they offer.
The cheques came from Zurich btw.

hi, we've been with colman marine, in poole. very good and competitive. had to make one claim about 8 years ago and was handled brilliantly.

I have been with GJW for 20 odd years.
had a claim for 2k couple of years ago, they stopped the excess.
I pointed out to them that I had done all the work myself and to get a Marine company in the claim would have been twice that.
recieved payment for full amount a week later

We have been motorboat owners for 5 years. Our boat is worth more than our house. Insured with Pants from the start. Not renewing with them.

3 years ago we had a small claim for minor malicious damage. The repair quotes were ridiculous so we did most of the work ourselves, the final claim was just over £1k. The claims handler at Pants was helpful, sympathetic, and made the whole process easy. Actually asked at the end whether we were sure everything had been dealt with OK.

But last year was different. Our boat was hit by a massive catamaran in Guernsey while we were moored. Clearly not our fault. I have a video. The claims handler at Pants was a complete contrast with the first one. Gave me advice which led me into a mess, argued the toss about the method of repair (wanted me to hammer a bent stainless steel rub rail and screw it back on), refused to pay some costs incurred as a result of their advice because they were 'uninsured losses'. Thankfully our legal cover paid for a good barrister who sorted everything out so we weren't out of pocket but it was very stressful. I detested the whole experience. I had to keep reminding myself that owning a boat is supposed to be fun. I wouldn't now recommend Pants to anyone.

And if anyone at Pants reads this and wants to pick a fight I have every email and records of every telephone conversation and I'll see you in court.

I insure with Navigators. I have had 2 claims in 12 years. One the boat was broken into and stuff stolen with minor damage. Irepaired the damaged door myself and they paid without any fuss. The second claim I bumped the boat on the pontoon next to my berth when my engine failed as I went intop reverse to slow enteing the berth. They paid to have the boat repaired without any problems. Not perhaps the cheapest but good to deal with.

We have been with Y for some time and are just changing boats so have asked for a quote.

I have always found their service to be excellent and having boated for years with no claims I have been unfortunate enough to have to make two claims from them - not major amounts but both dealt with very well.

Their policy has been the subject of much discussion on here and is rated very highly and whilst cost have increased so too has the rest of the market so I am not sure that I can see a reason to move away from them.

Why not Y Trev?

In the last 3 weeks I habe bought two boats, sold two boats and buggered about with the names and the Y team have been very helpful.

Not the cheapest but a well written policy.
Compound rises over 2 years of 20% each year, bearing in mind the boat has done less than 30 hours in each year, is on a safe mooring and is visited every few days. Last year they initially wanted 40%, but offered 20% if I didn't say anything on here. When I offered to accept a higher excess - say £500 they just took the rise with a suggestion of a £2,000 excess.

I think they do to well from folk singing their praises on here. So I won't be any more.

Craft Insure have offered a better price comparable with last years from Y and is a Nav & Gen policy (Zurich I think). They will likely get my business.

GJW make the quoting process too painful. Not tried Pants and after the tale above I won't bother.

I wil see what Saga want.

Thanks for the feedback from all respondents.

How do the policy wording compare?
