About 8 years ago I bought a Tilley hat - having left a large number of baseball caps floating in the 'oggin. I have used this a lot and was a bit sad when a couple of holes appeared in the front where it flexes. I sent the hat back and have just recieved a new one free of charge under their lifetime warrenty service. This is only what they promised but the nice thing is they sent the old one back as well - so I can use it as a spare, lend it SWMBO or use it when doing crappy jobs. Sorry this is little more than a testimonial but I though some folk may be interested.

Tilley hats are also handy if you want to generate random 'hat overboard' situations, to test your recovery skills. Mine is in and out of the drink like a yoyo.

No idea what you mean by this! Do you mean they are rich in fibre, resistant to wind, good at deflecting crap, large enough to ram up an elephant's fundamantal oriface, or a combination of all the above?

At the price they charge for them, I would have thought that they would send a replacement every six years as a matter of course.

No Martin!
What crossed my mind was the way that they have been advertised for the past decades, you know, the story of how a zoo-keeper had his hat picked off by the animal who proceeded to ingest it. The keeper waited for a couple of days till it came out from the other end, washed it and carried on as if nothing had happened. I believe that this passage happened twice.
I always thought it was rather far-fetched - even though it has certainly proved to be an eye-catcher!
Personally I don't think that I would re-use a hat after a similar incident.
A couple of friends of mine, as well as their son, use Tilley hats and are quite pleased with them. Fortunately there are no elephants in this country.....;<)
Fair Winds! (as in sea breezes..)

Thanks Wally
This curious tale gives new dimensions to some of my stock phrases "If x happens I will eat my hat" and "an elephant ate my homework" and "as mad as a hatter".
