This may be a daft question, but we have just received a lovely box of charts for the Tampa Bay area in Florida for our Easter trip, but there don't seem to be any tidal charts. Now, having been there, but only on sunbathing duty many years ago, I can't remember, do they have tidal flows? I've also got a very pretty book giving me details of the West Coast Boating, fishing and diving information, anything else we need?

Sorry rugby starting now, so I'll be back later, or after the Boat Show tomorrow. See whoever knows me there.

Can't answer your question I'm afraid. However having noticed your boat name would it be the Broom 42CL
of John Harper featured in MBM October 2000 ? If it is its looks like a fine machine. I have a Broom 37 Crown
of 1980 vintage. Whilst considering a new Broom, the 42CL has featured high on my list.
Can I ask how she's performed since new? Be happy to know. email clivegraham@yahoo.com
May see you on the Broom stand tomorrow (Sunday)

I think there are tides over there but couldn't say how big they are. Artur Wood, a regular poster here lives in Florida, you could send him a personal message.

Re: small tides

From memory of wcoast, there are tides, but not massive heights - 3-4 feet max. Much-vaunted Miamai beach remains a plonked down pile of owch owch scrunched-up sea shells dug up from somewhere. hence tidal streams pretty weedy. Arthur Wood will know all - I *think* he is gulf coasty (west).

Yes, you'd be correct. I've forwarded your response to HIM, as I'm not remotely techy, which is probably what you're interested in, so he'll probably resond when he gets time, and then you probably wont be able to shut him up about it.

What can I say..., there's much more space than the 38 that we had, (this is our 3rd Broom) previously a European 35, and a 38. We can entertain loads at the back. We've had a dozen children in the saloon playing computer games, more in the dinette playing cards etc, and the aft deck piled high with all their trainers, and as the chiller is on the aft deck, that's where we hide. I've not managed to fill all the storage yet, but in retrospect, I'd have had the forward cabin fitted out differently cupboardwise. Our only problem now is as the bigone, and the pocket rocket are growing older they don't want to share the forward cabin, so we may yet have to think up some other solutions.

Sorry I didn't see you on the Broom stand, I did languish there for most of the afternoon, being fed cups of tea.

Thanks for the reply and the info. I did get to the Broom stand probably about 2-2.30 spent some time on
415 OS then with Andrew Stone on the 450 talking tech. Did'nt get any offers of tea though, maybe had
I put that deposit down for the 42CL. I believe we could have been there at the same time
by we passed like the preverbial ships in the night. Did you notice one person in Motorcycle leathers
(boots off of course) and RNLI baseball cap ? Anyway finished with good look around the 42 CL,
having seen the small front cabin on the 415, (cos of deep V hull) the 42's was noticably larger on par
with my 37 Crown. Thanks again for the reply look forward to chatting with Mr H Regards

Yes we have tides on the west coast of Florida. I am about 100 miles south of Tampa Bay. In general our tides will only be about 2 feet or so. In the winter time we tend to get some more extreme high and low tides. Our weather here can also affect the tides as most of the water around the west coast of Florida is a bit on the "skinny" side. A good nor'easter will push much of the water out of the harbors and bays, which will result in lower low tides and during the winter they can run to about 4 foot low.

When you get to the Tampa Bay area you can pick up tide charts from many different sources. Most of them are small monthly charts on about a 5 X 8 card folded in half...given away free. Most marinas have them readily available.

Have fun and watch your depth finder!!

Some of the tide software is a bit off on accuracy due to the size, depth and flow rates of the harbors and bays. So it can be a little tricky making sure that you have the right information.....so you want to get it locally.
