Tidal Programs

I have been using a program called Tides on an old Psion 3 series PDA, from a firm called Maritek, which I can no longer trace. This gives tidal heights for most UK and European ports and harbours etc. in tabular form for periods settable from 5 to 40 mins. Altough probably not as accurate as Alnamac data, it is much easier to use and has provided me with good enough tidal data to get me around much of UK and Brittany over the past few years.
Does any one know if this is still produced or whether there is any similar tidal prediction programs with tabular data for heights between high and low water for use on modern Palm OS PDAs ?

Hi Dan

I was down at Tradewinds Marine at Conwy Marina over the weekend and noticed they had a tidal program that worked on windows ce I can't remember what it was called but I am sure they will be able to help you to confirm whether it is suitable for your needs.

They do mail order and you can phone them on 01492 572777 or email them on sales@tradewindsmarine.co.uk, hope that helps.

There is a program called tide tool for the Palm OS, however, it is not able to supply data for UK ports as this is apparently copyright to the UKHO. I am not aware of any other UK port tidal programs.

Bellfields Tideplotter comes with Windows Pocket PC program on the CD.

The only problem from your description is that it give High & Low water in tabular format but intermediate positions are in Graph format. You can get intermediate data by holdong a cursor over the required area on the graph.

I use it & am very pleased with it.

Does it come with a Palm version? 'cos that's what he's after

I use the Belfield program on my laptop, and it's a wonderful program, but I haven't seen a Palm version of it. Maybe if enough of us asked, they'd consider it

Re: Tidal Programs and UKHO

Thanks for your replies. It would seem that the UK Yachtsman is now severely disadvantaged in comparison with other Europeans following the deciscion by UKHO to enforce copyright fees on tidal data. There now appears to be very few programs giving good tidal coverage of UK ports, making tidal calculations more diffiicult and therefore potentially less accurate and less safe. Perhaps this is a case where the RYA might wish to become involved !

Am sure Belfield will work on a Palm - I use it on a Jornada and works very well. Back up is excellent as well.

Jornada has a Microsoft Windows ce operating system. The Palm uses Palm operating system. Programs that run on one, will not run on another, unless the writers have created two completely different versions of the software. So, though it will run happily on your Jordana, I still have never seen a version that runs on palm <s>

You are quite right - took this from the web site:-

"Handheld device running Windows CE 2 H/PC or H/PC Pro Edition or Pocket PC or Pocket PC 2002.
450Kb free space on handheld device. "

Is Palm one of these?

I doubt if this program will run on anything less than a regular PC, but I'm not sure.

I have a program called "J-Tides"... it is a java based program that runs in windows, to include XP without any problems, and though I haven't done any checking it is my understanding it is a worldwide tide program. I know its been accurate here on the Gulf of Mexico....which is a tricky place because the tides aren't normal here.

I'll check and see if there are European Tides in it and let you know. It is I think a shareware kind of program.
