thought i\'d bought it today (non boaty)

was going to pwllheli last night to boat just to do a few jobs, swmbo taking binlids shopping today, any way didnt go. this morn sat swmbo and binlids go and leave me alone, start tidying garden as you do, then strimmer out and then lilac tree wnats trimming, am in the thick of it when feel sudden pain in wrist, sodding wasp is jabbing me good style, swipe it off and realise there are hundreds of the little sods, run indoors and get a wasp spray and beat em off, leave that area alone and get on with chopping another bush down, quite warm and sweating a bit, half hr goes by and am all of a sudden itching in armpits and groin, lift shirt big rash, hmm this not right, run cold bath to lie in and try and stop itching, get in bath and suddenly think again not right this, get out and feeling very foolish dial 999, realise that lips etc are now swelling, operator wont let me put phone down, no pants on, bollocks to this aint going in ambulance with out trousers so stagger, hey there is something wrong, voice going all husky, and get trousers, operator giving me hard time, ambulance arrives, no messing you are haveing an anaphylactic shock reaction. needle in to hand and hydrocortisone straight away, almost immediately swellings and rash start to go away and nee naw to hospital. anyway am ok now, got to go and see gp, looks as if i will have to have have an epi pen near me at all times from now on. reason for post is just to let you all know, have worked all round the world, have been bitten by god knows what including wasps and never really had any probs (mozzies always made me come out in enormous lumps) and all of a sudden have now got a serious allergy, it can happen to anyone, if you get stung and develope itchiness in other parts of the body and a rash and feel funny, dont hesitate, dial 999, this could have been the day for me, be warned

Bloody dangerous that gardening lark, stay away from it, boats are much safer!
Seriously though, I hope everything is OK now!

Reminds me of the time I had my first job working in the New Forest. I was clearing some weeds from small plantings when I felt a sting on my chest, found and killed wasp on my chest then looked down - my legs were covered in wasps as I was standing on a nest! Ran, stripped clothes off and after about 100 yards ended up stark naked but no more wasps. Counted twenty three stings which hurt a great deal but soon went down. They say that 800 stings can kill without any reaction but too have just the one sting and that happen is frightening! Glad allis Ok now.

I had a similar thing a few years back - had 3 anaphylactic thingies - all 999 jobs. GP recommended St Mary's anti-allergy hospital in Paddington. Once tested they inject you with tiny wasp sting, increasing every month for 2 years. By the end, I was getting 3 wasps injected and no reaction at all - less irritation than a nettle. Now entirely cured (though I haven't tested it for real!) Worth the commitment of very regular visits since you can never be entirely sure your epi pen is to hand - I used to keep leaving mine at home. The specialists also recommend taking anti-histamine tabs one week before going away or 'risk' activities like gardening to help the body cope with the sting. You may not be allergic however. It may be that you just got stung lots of times.

You can always tell a WW2 Wasp - big moustache and roundels on his wings.

Seriously though Stu, glad you acted quick. Noted.

I was very sorry to hear about your misfortune & I'm pleased you are over the worst & recovering.

The cruel & unpleasant side of my nature is curious about the Wasps. Were the species CE marked or perhaps a Grey American import.

Sriously though i'm glad your OK.

ta for the kind thoughts, thought you couldnt be too bad, african by the feel of it, worst sting ive had in the uk, had em in africa and they know how to stick it to you.
interesting thing it left the sting in so could it have been a bee perchance? is that right, bees leave it and die, wasps keep on going?

Yes. I bee leaves behind the entire sac and dies. A wasp just injects and can do so again and again. Important info to get clear though for the allergy chaps. Surpised you were stung multiple times though 'cos that would mean you were stung by more than one bee. I'm no doctor, but I'd have thought multiple bee stings is enough to bring on anaphylaxis in most people so you may not be allergic to anything.

Yes, I'm about as far from an expert as you can get, but I believe that, we humans, are too thick skinned for your aveage Bee so they have to leave their stings behind after they attack.
