THOSE OF US WITH BOATS IN THE MED

Looks like they extended the travel advisory to the Balearics now. Given the rate of infection per 100,000 there compared to the U.K. this is baffling and I feel bad for the Spanish and all those Brits who are either there or had planned a trip as their travel insurance now compromised. I can only conclude that life post Brexit will show no favours to the Brits and probably deservedly so.

Probably because folks will attempt get arounds .After all it human behaviour that’s perpetuating the disease .....well spread it in the first place .
Plus the FO ( read gov ) will be alarmed by the island’s measures to control it and the fact other nations like the Germans bringing it in . Emphasis has shifted down a couple of age demographics to the younger partying set .
Its the total risk assessment going forwards .
They have given it a go .......in a let’s give it a chance and see .But measures or the threat of measures is / was always there .

U.K. Airports and the industry within will be the biggest losers I am afraid .
In my view absolute madness ( sorry I know folks on here are using them or contemplating) in terms of unnecessary crowd gathering for leisure .
Its the shear vol of Brits going to Sp in the middle of a pandemic crisis ! ....Madness absolute madness at this stage .Something like 800000 per week .Thats 4 airport incidents per trip minimum ,Ludicrous .

Read somewhere on one of the news “comments “sites Gibraltar .I have not followed Spanish politics closely enough to appraise that comment in depth.
But picked up tit bits like tourism is 12 % of there GDP and Brits account for about a 1/4 of that fwiw ? That cash is better diverted back into the U.K. economy.

We have paid them 80 % to sit on there hands and they decide to up-sticks and splash it all around the Spanish economy, risking bringing Corvid back just when we are struggling to finally crush our numbers after they have plateaued off too high .

Tbh folks should in my view stay at home this summer, any home where ever that should be and not seek out or get involved in unnecessary crowd gatherings .

The Med boater group is tiny in the general scheme, ie how many of the weekly 800000 Brits flying into Sp are going to live on there boats respecting social distancing etc ? Not many .An in consequential number .
They have unfortunately collaterally just got caught up in all this .

A little bit hypocritical though coming from you isnt it? Do as I say not as I do?

From what I could see the vast majority of people on holiday in majorca (and by this I mean people staying in hotels etc - so excluding people who own boats/apartments etc) were being pretty sensible, the hotels looked like they had decent protocols in place to reduce risk etc.

No not really .In a Cummings esq explanation , I know i am pushing a snow ball up a sand dune trying to explain ...but here goes fwiw
Does not matter which bed we use .
The one in Switzerland, Antibes , London , Yorkshire or the boat currently in Italy .
last year I only spent 6 weeks in the U.K.
This year felt mugged being told to rtn to the U.K. from CH cut short winter sports to arrive at and be trapped for 3 months on a plague infested island .....CH has had less than 2K deaths , UK were getting over 1K / day in April ....so two days and it exceeded Switzerland s and maybe something like 12/15 in a whole month recently.

Italys current cases / 100 K is under 5 compared to U.K. s 14.7 and Sp 45 odd or what ever .

So I don’t think our movement in CH or IT or Fr has materially effected the Ro numbers .( was in Antibes last week btw )
Currently in CH ....walking in total isolation in the mountains, heading back to boat on Friday .

We travel in a bubble by car , don’t go looking for crowds , social distancing, hand gelling and been wearing a mask from day dot .

Eaten out in a restaurant 3 times since 16 th March when the ballon went up .
All in Italy , in the same marina place outdoors , the first time we were the only covers ( Wednesday 7 pm ish ) , other two about 4 covers but spaced at least 4 m apart in the open in a breeze .Thats our sum total contribution to crowd gathering over and above routine domestic food shopping which is a common denominator where ever we choose to reside .

Edit, question answered.
I don’t disagree with what you say.

I don't disagree either in that in life there are always those who try to get around things, and sometimes this has actually been a good thing historically. In this instance i do not believe that the scope so to do ie flying to Mallorca from the mainland to fly to the UK, is so prevalent there would be so many people doing it to make it meaningful, and in any case if we always legislate to the actions of the minority the world will be a pretty shitty place. This begs a whole different and by definition controversial issue, even leaving out the question as to whether it is ok for one person to travel all over Europe (sorry Porto) because they believe they are sensible (no disagreement re that) but restrict travel for others one assumes are not sensible. I have 4 children of University or just beyond age. Unlike most of my generation (that puts me in the older category) they are paying for their Uni education. They are also the ones whose job prospects have just turned to dust, who watched while our generation blew the lot in 2008 and then asked them to pay for it, and are now printing money so fast that even though they are going to get asked to repay this as well, will probably never be able so to do. Meanwhile they listen to us preaching to them about being young and how irresponsible they are, watch while the government hands out money that they will have to pay for and yet not one word spoken about the debts they are now incurring for an education that is rapidly becoming meaningless. They are still paying 6% pa on their student loans and not once do I hear people question the fairness of this. They also can read and understand the stats and the simple fact that their lives are being wrecked to save those of us who are, shall we say, approaching the back end of ours, when there is almost no risk to themselves. Frankly we should actually be applauding the young for being so patient and selfless but we should also stop expecting that they will continue to be. Bottom line, the whole approach to this needs to change. Apologies for thread drift!!!

I’ve read about these, what I’m most interested in is the rig you use. Is it screwed into the hull? On hinges?

Thanks Forty-Two! Do you think it worth it? I know they are popular in the States. Also, if you use hydrodynamic shaped floppers (I forget the name, it’s been a long time since I saw The Perfect Storm!) can you use them underway?

No the rig is at anchor only, not big or strong enough to use underway. Anyway I have Wesmar 4sq ft hydraulic fin stabilisers for that & boy do they work well. Best 20 grand i ever spent on the boat (2002) ?

Mixed views really, they do dampen things but with a 20 ton boat they can only do so much. I do put them out whenever I stay overnight & can feel the difference after I take them back in prior to leaving an anchorage. I think they cost around £500 when I bought them direct from the US about 15 years ago plus Import duties & VAT.

Thanks. Something to think about!

Italy’s doing well with its measures around here , Thurs day 5 dead + 180 new cases for the whole of IT .
Contrast that with Sp , UK and Fr .
Plenty of room on the beaches .

They are not going anywhere and bringing it back and because of the images and records of Bergamo etc ......nobody’s coming ( N EU folk ) here , they all off the Sp bombing that out .

Why doesn't the FT mind their own business, I wonder?
From a boating viewpoint, it looks like this is going to be the best season ever, and I see no need to share it with others.
Yeah, I know, the economy, and so on and so forth.
But hey, it's only money...!
