I am about to order my Almanac. Previously I have bought Reeds full UK version, or their English Channel version - I only sail the South Coast and possibly Northern France.

Any views on the PBO one?

Thank you.

Personal view only. If you have an old Reeds aboard, the latest PBO will do nicely.

If you don't have a full Reeds, the PBO is not as detailed.

I'd prefer the latest Reeds, as I don't like trying to cross check if there's a lot of things going on, and mistakes likely

Must think I am a politician, i.e. answering a different question.

Lat year I bought the looseleaf version, as refills are less costly and easy to leave much of it at home; I will not buy refills this year as I think the pages are rather flimsy.
I ended up puting the sheets needed in transparent loose leaf document wallets.

Will go back to full version.

I buy a new Reeds loose leaf every 2 years. For the years I do not buy one I go the the Library and copy the tide tables for the months and ports I will feasibly get to. The Dover one is obviously important.

The old reeds loose leaf harbour chartlets can be compared with the new ones and if they are same as the new ones they can be used when entering new harbours in adverse weather etc and then binned. Saves the new ones and means the info is "at hand"!!

works for me ducky!

Good suggestion; I will try it.

Bought "The Yachtsman's Tidal Atlas" Micheal Reeve-Fowkes.

This year will finally try to use it.

Me too, I am still using the 2003 reeds.

I have Bellfield tide plotter and print off all the standard ports tides I use and obviously the local ports I use regularly.

I will maybe buy 2006, but as I tend to use pilots when cruising, the reeds being a few years old is still sufficient. Maybe I should really buy them more regularly, but so far the 2003 with updated tides is still adequate for me.

Why bother? I havent since the 90s so have saved at least couple of hundred quid.
Plenty of free tide times around and if you use MFR tidal streams based on Cherbourg you get at an instant glance tide heights for any port at any hour. Bit of research and the free HO chart corrections keeps you up to date with any chart alterations.

Re: Almanac at a Public library

I am amazed that you have the current almnac available in your public library. No chance here, they don't even seem to have a decent dictionary.
