Hi All

I'm off to Nice for a long weekend and was planning on making a visit to Antibes for a wander and look around town and in the marina.

Any suggestions of things to do / see while I'm there?

I must admit I'm seriously considering selling up my own 30ft'r and buying something in the SOF, or chartering so it is slightly more than just a day out; more of some forward planning / research.

Thanks
Kenny

If the trains are running then they are great for getting around, but there has been a long running strike. I think things are improving.

All the major brokers are in Antibes so you might want to do some research and then get some viewings booked? Youboat.fr isn't bad.

One of the Antibes massive will be along soon for top tips. We are in Beaulieu so the other way, but closer. If you head that way let me know and I am more than happy to help.

Pop down to the IYCA and jump on board my new boat for a drink. You can't miss her she is the new cream one ....

If the trains are nfg this weekend then it's easy enough to take a bus to Antibes, the bus station is just behind the station and if you walk from the bus station to the station you'll see Port Vauban as you walk over the footbridge across the railway tracks. It's a five minute walk from the station.

If you're thinking about moving the boat there then have a walk around the port (it'll take a while...) and get your bearings. Send me a pm if you'll be around on Sunday.

Antibes old town is very scenic and worth a wander. Lots of restaurants by the old walls, in the (small) covered market, place de la republique. Happy to chat through the pros and cons over a beer.

Superyacht Times have some pictures today. I have some others but cannot publish.

The 7 cars parked side by side could easily fit on the bathing platform !

Joking aside DILBAR has just pulled in for the first time today. Mighty impressive. L....
Wow. Usmanov seems to have bought the berth (from Paul Allen) and it must be one of the few alongside berths in the med that can take 155m. You'd think he'd need planning permission to park something that big there. He has had the harbour privately dredged during the last few months so that the new Dilbar can get in.

Remember crew are not always all at same time. Old Dilbar had 2 captains who used to swap over; one when Usmanov was on board (who is transferring to new dilbar) and relief captain for rest of time (who looks like staying on old dilbar). Similar with other crew, and normal for a really big boat. It is conceivable that new dilbar has a pool of 100+ crew from which 60-80 are working at any one time, for example, but I'm guessing a bit. Heck of a lot of cleaning needed when it red-rains on her. You gotta remember also that crew create need for more crew: once you have a lot of crew you need a chef or two for them, and someone to wash/iron their sheets and uniforms, and do their payroll, and so on. Thus, plenty of the crew look after the crew, as opposed to the owners/guests. It's a full on ecosystem

Yeah, amazing to see vessels of this size run privately, worlds apart from the type of boating most of us enjoy.

Yep. Worlds apart from most super yachts too
One of the funny things about the old dilbar (and maybe the new) is that its chase boat is, gulp, a squadron 78. I pass it every time i leave my berth. Puts me right in my place!

Could be worse.
I spotted once in SoF a rather weird vessel called Garçon, 60+ meters IIRC, with an helipad and all sort of water toys loaded on her deck.
A bit of googling revealed that it's only meant as a chase vessel for carrying around all that stuff without bothering the guests of some megayacht with the loading/unloading activities....!

Thanks all for your comments, although I do think we may have wandered slightly off topic
;-)

Any other suggestions of restuarants / hosterlies / places to visit?

It's then a short walk back to the Station up Boulevard Marchal Foch .

Garcon is the support vessel to ACE. They were both berthed in port adriano a couple of years ago. I shared a taxi with a couple of their crew. They were telling me that the owner didnt like the hassle of having all the toys (helicopter, speed boats, jet skis, sail boats etc etc) on his main boat, so he has garcon to go ahead a day early to wherever he is heading and get all the toys ready, before the main boat (ship?) arrives a day later.

Its a different world .
