Re: Then And Now.

See, like me, you are currently spread across more than one Portugal thread so a possible way ahead would be a Portugal Sticky?

Unfortunately you would stil have folk posing new threads specific to their situation.

There again, you could shoot for a Portugal Sub-forum?

Wonder how management would view this?

I couldn't possibly comment---I stand on the fifth amendment
Another Bruce Yard member pitched up here last night! David with Imoutahea! Saw it coming in, went to help and suddenly realised who it was.
Anyway, more detail please!
Pics welcome!

Re: Then And Now.

A number of yachts at anchor in Culatra (off the village) dragged in the recent strong winds N/NNW (> 40kts recorded) - one returned to Lagos for repairs after dragging onto the pontoon in front of the village causing significant hull damage on the starboard side (video footage shows near 1.5 - 2 metre swells as well), another Dutch couple were surprised to find their yacht a mere 20 metres from the same pontoon, and not where they left it when they went ashore.

Reports from others there recently suggest holding is not what it was and a number of yachts were fortunate that folks were aboard when the wind and resultant swell came through.

For information.

Re: Then And Now.

Olhao MARINA???????

Just been told by one of the tourist boat skippers that Olhao boat harbour has been purchased by a Dutch company and is in the process of being extended and turned into a "marina" with fewer small boat berths, more large ones and provision for visitors.

Is this fact or just another rumour?

Word on the street in Olhao a few weeks ago was that a sale was imminent . Various rumours of what might be on the cards, from not much at all to extending it all the way to the ferry dock getting rid of the existing small boat pontoons. Hope not.
Impossible to know much for sure really.
PM still won't let you anchor in front of the markets though was OK early in the year. Looks like they might have stopped work down near the boatyard for now, PM moving boats anchored there as well though no one seems to have been bold enough to give it another go on the hook there.

Re: Then And Now.

If Olhao Marina (or should that be Marina de Olhao) were to become a reality, provided it was competitively priced, it's close proximity to Faro airport and potential for local sheltered day sailing within the Ria Formosa could make it a very attractive alternative to the other Algarve marinas.

It would also take some pressure off the anchorage at Culatra.

Any guesses when it will be completed?

Probably never, just like the one that was being built at Portimao at Ferragudo.

Ha ;) everything is a guess round here til it happens :)

I really hope they don't build all the way down the front, wouldn't be the same looking out towards Culatra through a forest of masts sipping a sagres in front of the markets.

So true!

Another thought, Marina de Olhao would be almost dead center along The Algarve, giving the option of left or right on departure. Up the western end of the Algarve the only option is turn left, or sign up for an epic off to The Islands - bit far for the weekend cruise.

Another thought, - I hope they don't build one there at all. The current lack of marina keeps many of the hooray henry's away. If they had easy berthing just think what the ria would be like! I think I would probably stop going.

Wasn't aware we have many HHs in the Algarve and it's a long way from the Solent.

They'd probably run aground trying to get all the way up to Olhao :)
