The things women think important

I think you have to read between the lines....if you can’t find a place to park your car....it’s usually because the authorities don’t want you to be driving. If the cost and inconvenience of living onboard is built into the system....then the powers to be don’t want you living on the water
"What do you do" then?

If, instead of soap, you used one of these....
Laundry ball - Wikipedia
People may not notice you discharging from your washing machine
Reducing the massive over-dosing recommended by the detergent manufacturer might be useful too

No experience with laundry balls, and dont much want any, but I have found a plunger-style agitator to be very effective when used in a bucket. Theres a type of Taiwan traffic bollard with a base flange that works well, as did a commercial grade sink plunger in the UK.

More speculatively, I wonder how steaming would work for non-delicate laundry. A little water makes a lot of steam.

If anyone spots a boat with a host of grey mullet floating belly-up around its thru-hull fittings it’ll be likely yours post-experiments with steam. 😂

You used to be able to buy small 'manual' 'table-top' washing machines, with hoses for water in and out, and a crank handle to turn the drum. (I think there were electric versions, too.)

I think a washboard (the other type!) would be easier to store, though, and you could have a mangle mounted on the pushpit. ;)

We had a washing machine with a power driven mangle attachment (maybe link something similar to the electric winch?).

IIRC my mother got her hand caught in it once and got some bruising, but I have a vague impression that it had some sort of spring loaded release mechanism that prevented limb loss

Yes, it’s a washing machine. In fact a washer/ drier.

They were somewhat surprised to find it there but it is very clever use of space.
I must admit it’s was never high on my list of priorities but herself now says it was one of the things that pushed her towards a Broom 42 over a 38 when we were looking at them - the one we saw in Amsterdam had one in the cupboard just before the main cabin and I have seen another one on a site where they have a washer and a drier stacked on top of each other.
Overall very impressed with the Linssen. This one is 13 years old but is in immaculate condition.
The only slight thing that is putting us off a bit is the Volvopenta D3 engine as there are a lot of horror stories about them. This one looks like new with no evidence of major part replacement and has been regularly serviced. Some older ones have Mercury engines and the latest (2022 on) have Yanmar but they are out of our price range ( £500k+)
Well - I guess you are looking at a nice Linssen / 40 - 45 ? They have this arrangement in the shower cabin.

If you allow 50L/cycle for the washing machine and assume it’s used daily then the 240L grey water tank will probably need emptying every other day even with only one couple onboard.

I’m afraid I don’t know what regulations apply in NL as to grey water but, if it is the case that you have to discharge it into a regulated system, then you just need to think how that fits with your proposed use.
Well - regulation is one thing. How you use it and what you (and most boaters around the Netherlands with older boats) is an other thing.
We had the same set up on a rented Linssen 45: We used the machine all two weeks ... not more and exit was normal on the Ijsselmeer.
Just use a fluid for washing that is no harm for environment (bio things).

Yes. Linssen Grand Sturdy 40.9 AC. Actually two different ones both very similar, one slightly newer and has air con.
Our intent as of last week was to rent one for a week from the company mentioned earlier in this thread then look at buying later but my in-laws went to look at these and are keen on them.
I tend to be a bit more cautious but my wife is also keen to go.
She runs an antique shop here but has been talking about giving it up for a while as the rent and rates have gone up considerably in the past couple of years. We have received an offer for the stock which, while below what we think it is worth, gives us the capital to buy it ( or actually half of it as it is a three way ownership with in-laws and another Dutch couple)
My wife isn’t allowed to travel at the moment as she is recovering from surgery but we have agreed we will go over and have a look the week after next when she is and also meet the other couple.

I love the Linssen Yachts - excellent quality, good build, reliable yard. I would buy one the next day ... If I would go boating and living aboard around the Netherlands.
But as you see: my region is the Med. ... Italy and around and I got a nice Azimut 46 - different - but we love it and we plan to spend 4-5 month around sailing on the yacht.

We are going to start in the Netherlands but intend to move on to Belgium and France come time. Originally we thought about a more powerful boat that could go on to Italy or Spain but I think inland and close coastal is more suited to us now. One of the things we have to agree with the other couple is how we deal with the movements - don’t want them to be planning to use their time in Netherlands when we have moved it to France!

French inland waterways are really nice
