The things women think important

For the cost of a washing machine, or more importantly the extra boat to accommodate a washing machine (and its running costs) you can buy a lot of spare pants and socks!
I spent a couple of months bumming around the USA in 2007 and never washed socks and pants. Bought them in Walmart or Walgreens and threw them away once worn.

If I was cruising round the world, living on the hook and having to take a dinghy ashore to do washing then I’d understand the attraction. As a holiday boat, hopping from marina to marina / harbour to harbour not so much.

If you are going to treat your better half to a washing machine....I hope that you also have provided her with an iron and ironing board so that she really enjoys her holidays

Neither of us wear anything that needs ironed on holiday. I guess if we wind up in Paris and need a tux for Maxims, I’ll just buy one :)

We have a washing machine on board but don't use it that often. When at our home port a local lady picks up the washing and returns it later the same day. Often use marina laundry facilities when away rather than on board. Dishwasher is on every day, so that would be an appliance I'd choose over a washing machine any day.

Yes, the Broom we saw in Amsterdam had a dishwasher but they had completely revamped the galley and had a microwave instead of an oven. No realistic way of doing that on this boat.

How the other live……a laundry lady when boating! Do you have a scatter cushion plumper too? 😘

Never buy a boat to keep the wife happy. She won't go on it anyway and you will end up with a boat that you wouldn't have chosen.
Weird outlook! Maybe if you actually took her opinions into account properly she’d be just as keen as you to use the boat! Ah I see the problem - if you think a washing machine is “to keep the wife happy” you’ve picked the wrong wife - or at least got the wrong outlook! Our boat was bought to keep us both happy and my wife spends almost as much time on board as me.

Oh, the other thing it has that amused them but they didn't think essential is a powered, folding mast.

Last summer my wife an I looked at a Humber 448, a nice big and beamy flybridge cruiser. The boat had a full sized washer dryer under the galley worktop and that really impressed her. Unfortunately the boat sold before we could make an offer but ever since then see seems to expect every boat I show her to have the same. Strange priorities, where I'm looking at the condition of the hull, engines, maintenance log, nav equipment and construction of the boat while she is looking at the colour of the upholstery and if it has a washer dryer..

I rather like tke the simplicity of boatlife. Sailing mostly solo for months I wash assambled underware every few days. If the sun doesn't shine I use a sweeper (image) to take first 50% of the moist out. And no, I don't use the device for letuce off course 😇

We have a salad spinner on board. We’d have to mark them clearly to prevent misunderstandings😂

2 fridges encouraged my wife aboard. Alcohol storage is an important factor to her and her friends along with a decent loo

When we went to Channel Islands and Brittany last year we hadn’t anticipated needing to do laundry but we got stuck in Granville for a week with a broken engine so had to make use of the marina facilities. Her ladyship refused “to have my knickers hanging from the radar mast to dry” so went off to buy some more. While doing that she somehow managed to buy several T-shirts, paints of shorts, etc.
We live on board for months at a time and wish we had room for a washing machine. However as we are at anchor in the Caribbean 99% of the time Mrs M hand washes her knicks. They then get hung on one of these:

Now always referred to as

“The knicker chandelier”
