Route South

We are considering the Rhine as a route south from Holland in 2013.
Had a long chat with a friend who used this same route some years ago.
Fancy the idea of a hanging a left for a quick visit to Basle, Switzerland before continuing South to St Jean de Losne, then turning right for the run up to Paris and then back via the Siene and the French coast.
On the other hand we may remain in Holland for a second summer.
Good this retirement!!
So many decisions.

Not done the Rhine yet - but have been told that some parts of the Rhine require you to have a pilot. Anyone else heard that?

above 15 mtr, a rhine patent is required, if i remember correctly.

A nice voyage is up meuse, c de l'est sud, up doubs, right to basle,(has the advantage your passport is swiss stamped schiffer basin, which comfuses many a customs officer away from europe) then down rhine all the way!

alternative, if shorter on time, up meuse, l 'est n down moselle, & rhine.

beats flogging up hill which is slow and expensive on fuel
