I know its a few months ago that I asked the question re cheap moorings in the south west, but, just to show that info recieved is acted on........
I had the pleasure of going down to the sailing club today on the Exe
( the area recommended by LJS previously ) Beautifull! and what a sunset, with two Devon Yawls racing as a backdrop.

Glad you liked what you saw. The Exe is a much loved estuary by local water users though unfortunately it is suffering as everywhere from officialdom and commercial development. It is likely to become a Trust Port in the nearish future and navigation charges will be added to the current mooring charges - interesting to note that up to a few years ago you just dropped your bottom gear where you fancied and hanked on some good chain - those days are now gone. I hesitated to respond before to the request for "cheap" moorings because this is questionable - OK relative to a marina - but you cannot skimp on quality and maintenance of ground tackle. Several mooring possibilities and it is well worth taking local advice especially if you do not live locally enough to check things very easily. There are some good people on the river - but also some likely to give less satisfaction!!! Also plenty of Clubs - from Dorset you would probably prefer the east Devon side with Exe SC and Topsham both sailing cruisers. However, your mooring would be more likely to be on the opposite side where you have Starcross racing dinghies (Dart catamarans a speciality) and Starcross Fishing & Cruising Club, a club with broad catholic tastes with many motorboaters as well as cruisers and a strong fishing section. You might like to look at the new Exe Estuary web site, www.exe-estuary.org, which should develop some good local links in time (use with caution at the moment). SFCC have a functional site aimed at members http://website.lineone.net/~sfcc and Exe SC used to have a site but not sure what its URL is now. Drop me a message if you have further questions - probably LJS if you are predominantly interested in Exmouth.

Overcomming the powers of darkness.

We endured gales to get from Lymington to Poole and then on to Weymouth a few weekends ago.

W/E before last we sailed to Exmouth on the Friday to be able to lay up for 6 weeks in the Turf Lock basin before continuing Westwards for the summer.

All carefully arranged well in advance with the waterways manager. Rang as we set off on the Friday morning to confirm the staff would be there on high tide Saturday morning to lock us in.... sorry no can do. They had hired a crane and the full compliment of staff were unavailable but "welcome to Exmouth" anyway.

The title of this post is a quote from Tom Cunliffe (Shell Channel Pilot) ref: Turf Lock operation.

The locals at the Harbour told me that berths will remain empty most of the season, but still couldn't hold up there, even on short notice to shift if berth was required, as they are "all taken this year sir, Welcome to Exmouth".

Still, the estuary looks attractive enough, looking forward to returning, might even look for something a bit more permanent one day as it is just off the end of the M5.

Meanwhile Aspire is well and truly chained to a visitors bouy for a week or three!

"Welcome to Exmouth".

Oops!

Forgot to mention how things work (or more to the point don't work down this way) on the Exe, only reliable way to get things done is diy, if other arrangements have been made expect them to be postponed/cancelled at short notice!
