Following everyones advice on dealing with the tank full of old diesel, Blue Moonlight is in the water (pontoon in Port Solent)

The diesel fired up first time after my bleeding the fuel system.

Had a spot of bother getting the cooling water running thru the engine, cured by back flushing it with a hose pipe. I think there was some cr*p in the bit where water passes thru the gear box.

Only problem I do have is that as soon as the ignition is turned on the rev counter hits max revs and stays there.

I haven't had time to take a good look but any hints as to what might be wrong would be a great help.

Depends on rev counter drive system, but it sounds like you have a dc feed to rev counter, instead of a pulsed one. Check on feed to rev counter i.e. 12 volt, or zero or there abouts which I would expect without engine running, do not rule out a duff rev counter though.
