The broker paid the funds over from the sale of our catamaran and they've cleared, so we are now officially boatless and in the market for power

We chartered an 08 Targa 52 in the summer and it was very enjoyable, so that has given us pause for thought. We were going to buy semi-d or displacement, but now we are pondering planing after all.

SWMBO is glad we completed the sale, there was always the worry it fell through with the economy as it is. The talk 6mths ago was of a shift to sail from power (loss of red etc) and that cats would become more in demand as they give some of the benefits of both sail and power (refer to Gludy on that one). In fact we had to be aggressive on price to close a deal, selling for 25% less than the broker originally suggested as the asking price and it took 12 months.

I'll be looking for advice as we search for a new boat, I'm looking forward to it, we'll almost certainly hold off till the new year and see how the market plays out.

My advise as a nieve younsger: Buy what your heart tells you to buy, not what the economy demands you to buy.

If a diesel sucking planing hull puts a smile on your face, then so be it - "Youv'e all your life to be dead to be regretting things" /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I'd buy now, could there be more doom and gloom than there is at present? There will be some pessimistic sellers thinking the value of their boat will crash, so prepared to take silly offers now. First thing though is to decide if you want D, SD or planing hull? Might help if you told us how and where you want to use the boat?

[/ QUOTE ] Oh yes. Plenty of time for boat owners to realise that they will have to reduce outgoings/raise capital and that there are lots of other boats already on the market.

Congrats Kevin - surprising it took so long to sell though!

Happy hunting for your next toy /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif A buyers market at the moment, I think...

Cheers,
Rick

Have to say I agree with LS.

It feels a bit schadenfreuden-like (sp?) to be saying it, especially having just sold, but I suspect that private sellers and dealers are tweaking prices rather than seeing a significant change across the market - though there are probably spot deals that reflect the new reality. It would take a heck of an offer to make it worth taking on a 45ft-50ft boat now, with 6 months to wait before I could make good use of it.

Thanks Rick, the time it took to sell and price drop are a mark of the current situation I guess.

Feels wrong not to have a boat, even told someone who mentioned Portsmouth that it was where we keep our boat, before realising I don't have one!

When I get a chance to outline the parameters I'll start a "if you were me, what would you buy?" thread... always good for a debate!
