Twister Ken started a thread last autumn about trying to measure the heights of buildings by the shadow they cast.
I posted some flippant air-head remark about the sun rising through different windows - going ever southwards in our house as winter approached.
I'm overjoyed to report that at 06:45 this morning it rose through the right hand Kitchen window instead of the conservatory which is where it was a couple of weeks ago.
Progress.

Educational shadows

The shadow that I'm worried about is the one I heard on the radio this morning; that all the teachers in London are going to leave and set up home in Yorkshire because houses are cheap(er):))

Hooray! This morning the Sun here in Cornwall, when we can see it (!), rose over the second pine tree from the left for the first time since last October.
The daffodlils danced in January, the magnolias are magnificent, the camellias charming and the rhododendrons realise Spring is sprung. Progress indeed.

Forgot to mention that the Prima Spring Cup was blown away in Plymouth last weekend (50 knots and more from the south west) and now it is all coming back again on a easterly F9

The casting of Gelshield

We have spent much of this winter stripping antifoul and sanding the hull to remove every last trace, prior to re-applying Gelshield 200 that has become ineffective after 10 years. No slurry blasting here, so only the hard options available. We have been waiting for a weekend forecast that remained above 5 degrees at night but with lowish likelihood of rain. It would seem that, at least in Holland, that weekend has arrived, so we expect to be stirring and rolling from morning Saturday to Sunday evening. Then it's antifouling next week and launch the week after. In time for Easter, although experience tells me that is usually blown off and wet. Still, might be different this year.

Re: ah but

Never mind about the angle of the sun....just ajust the the size, lengh, hight of the yardarm so it always coincides with drinking time.....If you take this one stage further you can reverse the whole thing in the PM to extend it

Sunset over Sheppey

From Whitstable Seafront I can watch the sun set behind the Isle of Sheppey. In mid winter it sets just to the left of Sheppey, in June it sets just the the right of Sheppey and it traverses across Sheppey through the months in between.
With a bit of paint we could turn the Isle of Sheppey into a calendar.

ah but you are a uni lectrer so you can afford to live in such salubrious surrounds, what about the pbt's who are set to migrate en masse to yorkshire? Still every cloud has a silver lining, might just open a shop selling woolley sweaters and jackets with elbow patches.

Re: Sunset over Sheppey

Taking up the cudgels on behalf of overworked underpaid academics everywhere - one notices David that one chooses not to inform the forum of one's occupation. How can we call this a level playing field when we cannot respond to the barbed comments about elbow pads? My Corduroy trousers and brogues are also a part of this regalia as is my Paisley cravat in the summer months - with dispensation from the Dean.
Do we attempt to take the dustbin off your back when you are working?

Re: d\'s secret occupation

ooh, I teried to guess about this. Apparently so secret that we'd never ever guess. Hmm. But, he's go a beneteau in N Wales so it's not gonna be that whacky now is it? And he live in w yorkshire.

So he's possibly a translator English/Yorkshire. Or maybe the Yorkshire Pleasant Person Laureate? Or wallet-locksmith? Consulting Listener to Outlandish Tales of Childhood Hardship? Clog rental clerk?

aha only just seen this, so you finally took the bait John! It was on another thread that you asked to be insulted because it was character forming, so I tried to do it in a smiley sort of way having just heard a bit on the radio about teachers. Anyway if it lifts the average price of houses it might not be a bad thing, allow us to move out to a more upmarket area.

Didn't qualify as a dustman so will have to stick to my current role of......lateral thinker:))
