I think I started in 2004. It was a lot more fun with a lot of banter rather than pointless carping. Scottish independence and Brexit were the beginning of the end.
As for many other fora - I'm a mod on one - the only way to stop the arguments was to ban the subjects, in their broadest sense, and ban those who couldn't abide by the ban. A lot of fun and interesting discourse was lost, but the forum (and club) survived.

The boating world is constantly evolving and continues to do so, ways of spending leisure time and money has been expanded due to the internet.
Where once keeping a boat in the Mediterranean was the reserve of a very lucky few , this boating Forum has demonstrated that the opportunity is there for virtually anybody who might care to do so.
For those of us who enjoy the seasons and the challenges of weather and tides, forum has allowed us to extend our horizons, to contact boaters we would most certainly never had a chance to meet pre Forum, to garner advice and encouragement to go beyond our normal cruising range.

Any glance at the Forums will show that boats still require constant, irritating and usually expensive attention , its just that there now are far more different things on the boat to go wrong.

Some might suggest that anybody headstrong enough to spend a fortune on floating money pit and to even risk life and limb on the thing, might have some pretty trenchant opinions on other matters which might find there way into the conversation.
Despite everything that posters do to the forum it has survived and still is worthwhile reading for the content.
The forums have always consisted of some long term hardcore bores and those who appear in a Meteoric Heavenly Display of Lifestyle enthusiasm
and then disappear just as quickly.
It is always gratifying to log on the Forum and find the Mods have not taken the time and trouble to suggest you might like to do something more productive for few days other than prodding a keyboard.

The Mobo forum is a shadow of its former self. Back when I first joined in 2002 it was a lively place full of good natured chat and banter alongside helpful and interesting boaty stuff. The change has, in my view, been influenced by a couple of key factors. The first was the introduction of the Lounge and the second was the development of social media and the associated decline in cordiality associated with it, which undoubtedly caused some frequent posters to drift away.

Yes, it has evolved a lot over the years but the creation of The Lounge made a massive difference. Some embraced it whilst others (like me) couldn't be bothered to look for my M8s ( Yes, I had one once) in multiple forums. The biggest difference though was having to behave, whenever that was, when IPC ( was it them?) got serious about some of the drivel we posted.

Going back to the first days of the forums ... the date under my ID is of the later 'rejoin' .... there were far more comical and interesting banters .... usually better mannered and without the caustic atmosphere that can surface now.

When things were getting a bit dull ... someone would prompt with a post about Blue Ensigns .. Anchors ..... Racing Rules .... Power gives way to Sail etc. - there were 'Pet' subjects guaranteed to get things going again.

My 2004 date is also a ‘rejoin’ - Was posting under my real name from 2002. In 2004 I felt that a nom de plume would be preferable and got impatient with progress on getting it changed, so joined under another name. I think the first account did eventually get cancelled.

Back in the early 00s I was a rag ‘n’ stick sailor but the mobo forum was a lot more fun - whilst still being packed with plenty of information.

The Lounge definitely weakened this forum but, apart from that, the world has also moved on in ways that others have identified.

Are people talking about my leaking fuel tank ?….obviously it was leaking….as the first symptom was a fuel leak from the tank.
I would have fixed earlier…except I was delayed by all the bad advice I got from this forum…I believe Mr Googler’s contribution was ‘that will polish out’
