The fuse has blown at the panel so either there is a short in the cable or deck socket (to be checked when I am next at the boat) or there is a fault in the Autohelm itself. I have it at home and want to connect 12V to it. But the plug is two pin with no polarity marked. Polarity must matter because the plug has a cut out to ensure it can only be put into the socket the right way round. Will I blow it up if I guess wrong? Or should I wait until I can get back to the socket and establish which is the + side?

I have an old Autohelm 1000 ... I fitted the plug on the lead and wired the socket myself but I forget after all thse years how i knew what was the correct polarity but I guess the wires are colour coded.
You can down load the owners manual/ installation instructions from Raymarine's website. I am sure that will tell you.

You dont say if thie is the original analog one or the later " micro " but both are listed https://raymarine.app.box.com/s/nwf2s5ha9xrltggghogu/folder/720704863

Brown is positive !

If it's similar to my old AH2000, I just had the same question with mine - so I opened up the control box and used a meter set to continuity to check which wire was which at the plug end.

As above, brown is positive.

No way into the plug to see the colours without cutting it off so I'll work it out from the socket when I get back to the boat.

Exactly which model are we talking about ? I guess not in fact one of the "old Autohelm 1000" models which were either supplied without a plug or with a ( now obsolete) "Dri plug"

If this is in fact the later Raymarine ST1000 then you will find wiring details in the owners manual ( which you will find at https://raymarine.app.box.com/s/14ysxitaiit206zh5hkvm7maia4t2qqw/file/23740655775 if you have mislaid your copy )

See chapter 4, section 3 on pages 40 et seq in the above link
