A possible plan this weekend involves bringing a mate and his dog on board the boat, somewhere around the bottom end of the Beaulieu. Either anchored in the lower east/west reach or possibly using the visitors' moorings on the corner.

2hp outboard on the tender, so more range than rowing but less than planing, especially with two largish blokes and a dog.

Snooping around with Google Maps I can see that almost every point of access from a road to the water is either someone's garden or behind a gate festooned with "Private! Keep Out! CCTV In Operation!" signs. The two exceptions are the eastern end of Lepe Beach by the little lighthouse, which is a bit of a trek from the moorings if I'm up that way and potentially wet across the open mouth of the river, and the Royal Southampton's Gins Farm satellite clubhouse.

I don't know the club, or the site apart from what's visible from the river, so my main question is what their attitude is likely to be to someone parking a car there and then using the slipway to get out to a nearby yacht. Are they protective of their facilities, or happy to help out fellow yachtsmen? I know some might suggest using the clubhouse bar by way of "payment", but we don't really want the complication especially with a young dog, just a quick dinghy pick-up.

Alternatively, any other suggestions? It's probably going to be low tide-ish, which I think rules out the place where Inchmery Lane touches the water, on the north side of the river opposite Gull Island.

Royal Southampton are dog friendly. Actually people friendly too. The club has many reciprocals, are either of you club members anywhere? Even if not, I would give them a call and ask. I am fairly sure non members can book and use the moorings. They also have a bosun with boat, which could be another option.

Re the Lepe idea, there is a little slipway / easy beach acccess on the west end of the beach, where the coaches park. But it would be quite a way out to the channel and in anything other than flat calm, I wouldn't fancy it.

There is of course Bucklers hard ... short stay perhaps?

You can land the dinghy at the launching ramp at the Beaulieu River Sailing Club and walk along the beach on the Solent side from there as far as the row of cottages. There's a birdwatching hide and a good view of the Solent. it's a bird sanctuary so you should doubtless keep your dog on a lead.

I would say the RSYC site is your best bet. I have used it a number of times over the years. Your only issue may be low water....lots of mud. But I guess you could land/embark from the pontoons although I have always used the slipway. You could park your yacht on a mooring just off the club for a few minutes without too much trouble. Anchoring nearby may be tricky.
I have always found everyone to be very easy going there.

Ah the slipway ... one side is shallow and about the same depth as the water over it, the other side is deep. Don't ask me how I know...
