teleflex cable change to hydraulic

The end of the ram is tapped the same thread as the nut on the cable so simply screws on, the new ram cannot be secured as it moves in a slight arc as the steering turns. There is usually a couple of flats on the power ram that need to be in roughly the correct orientation, probably vertical not 100% sure on volvo but merc is vertical and its a very similar system

Tnx, yeh thought as much, but wanted to be sure b4 i ripped it all apart !

‘undo the large nut at the back of the ram & remove the split pin and clevis pin that attaches the inner cable to the steering arm. Once the nut is undone & clevis pin is removed you can then slide out the cable leaving the power assistance ram in situ‘

So the split pin and the clevis pin are to be found on the starboard side of the assistance ram, inside the fitting once i have undone the large nut on the starboard side ?

The clevis pin is right in the centre attaching the end of the cable to the arm extending forward from the drive
The not to loosen is the one on the cable not the one you pictured
Hope that makes sense

tnx, so the hole at the end of the teleflex cable is somhow connected the assisted ram Inside the assisted ram.
and this connection is exposed towards starboard when the teleflex rod end is withdrawn ?
in the enclosed pic the teleflex rod is all the way through, that is not what is going on with the assisted ram i ass u me ...

Hi that picture is of an outboard set up the end of the cable /ram has the same hole for the clevis pin which secures the pas ram to the central steering arm along with the end of the cable or ram
Probably going to be awkward to get at in your installation due to access but the pin needs to come out whichever way you go

Do you think its the helm at fault? Its more usual for the cable to corrode and go stiff.
Helms and cables are often interchangeable but occasionally require an adapter kit . Maybe worth emailing the company with the details of what you have and ask if its compatible with the new helm

just had an email from the Rotech guys, the play on the wheel i have is about 4cm
he did not think that was excessive on a cable system and did not think it was worth fixing it
with hindsight i did have similar play on my RIB, so perhaps this is normal ?
Well it's roughly the same amount of play that I have and my mechanic told me not to worry about it ("they all do that").

But I was intrigued by you video above and the potential to change just the gear unit behind the wheel (I see no need in changing the rest of the system that has worked perfectly for the past 15 years). Can you ask the Rotech guys if their gear unit is a simple plug and play with the existing cables and what Teleflex units it will replace?

There will always be a slight delay in a powered system as the cable or hydraulic ram has to move the directional shuttle on the power ram before you see any movement of the drive. 4cm doesn't seem excessive

Simon, when you move the steering wheel 4cm from side to side is it pulling / pushing the cables? Or is the play in the gear unit behind the wheel (which is what the video you posted is inferring)?

Pete, suspect it is in the gear unit, just feels so loose over the 4cm that i can not imagine it is moving anything else / the cable
removing the gear unit would be excellent ‘entertainment’ due to the poor access
so just taking it off and checking the unit is not a 5 min job
if i am going to remove the old gear unit i would order up a new one, have just mailed them again to check their unit will take a standard teleflex cable

This could be the unit you have at present...
