We are wanting to relocate to live in Devon/Dorset and I am looking into moorings possibilty around the coast. Teignmouth Harbour looks to be a small but very pretty spot to moor an 8m boat with shallow draft. I am sure there will be hoops to jump through to get a mooring there but I would appreciate any comments about moorings in the harbour, it looks as if most will be drying but that woiuld be ok.

I am sure that the Teignmouth Bar has its moments but on the chart it does not look anything like as bad as some of the Welsh bars like Carnarfon, Conwy, Aberdovey, Barmouth, Cardigan, Porthmadog etc either in terms of drying height, length on the bar, distance beam on to seas and so on.
Thanks for the warning though; I hope I do not have to eat my words!

A trawler was on the bar some time ago, so even the pro's can have issues.

Agreed, compared to some other entrances it is not too bad.

Bad conditions, wrong tide, engine failure-thats when you need to be carefull.
 
There's actually not a lot of non-commercial space below the bridge.
Current is fierce near the entrance.
Can be lumpy with W wind coming down the estuary.
I had a nice meal in the London Inn, Shaldon a little while back.
Not sure what you'd do with the boat for laying up?
 
I visited Teinghmouth for the first time this summer so can offer little advice other than to say that I thought it was a lovely seaside town. Very string tide in the entrance but the bar caused no problems in calm weather. Very limited facilities for the visiting yachtsman though.
 
Good luck in your search. There are lots of choices on the south coast of Devon. Have a good look at all of them as getting to some of them can be time consuming in the height of summer.
 
Humm might say that, as a dweller of South Devon, in my humble opinion, the River Teign is drastically under developed by the Town and the Harbour Authority / Commission.

Tis true that there are now pontoons for visiting Yachts to moor up to, lying off the Back (or River) beach, but no provision to actually get ashore from, so its a dinghy jobby.
There is a 'short stay' pontoon adjacent to the new Fish Docks that allows a facility to put people ashore easily but its requested that any Boat moves off within a short time, its really a 'dropping off' facility, the local Angling or Diving boats use it, but do not be put off by them.

Up river of the Shaldon Road Bridge is largely ignored, it almost dries out, but Motor Boats can make passage up to Coombe Cellars Pub / Restaurant which has its own Jetty to moor up to, although this year the Road Bridge lifting span was repaired, serviced and actually opened, but whether it really will be available for Yachts to pass through with their Masts still up remains to be seen.

The provision of suitable and available pontoons on the Shaldon side is non existant.
 
Yes Teignmouth, the whole place has not changed much since Crowhurst sailed out, which is fine by me.
Shaldon Regatta is grand and stands alongside Fowey Week as one of the most heart warming events you could attend.
It would be a good choice CO8. A number of small yards deal with moorings if you Google it. In the winter bigger boats are laid up at the side and behind the dock area, I think you can see it in the slideshow on the Harbour Commission website.
 
Might mention that, at high tides there appears to be oooddles of open water in which to moor up on, but google low water and low and behold 'Old Salty' appears, right in the center of the River; so on there its drying to approaching a metre it boats that can both take the Ground plus strong enough not to have the Gel Coats rubbed away. The clue is the line of moorings that follow the Teignmouth side of the river, on the Shaldon side it drys to a trickle not enough to catch crabs in. In the middle, across The Salty its local Dog Walking territory
 
One of the last Devon spots old school and still pretty as a picture. I believe moorings are well subscribed but you never know unless you ask. Depending what you are planning you can launch a tender off of the back beach or polly steps and other places. There's public showers etc on the Den which is a walk but hey! My cousin moors above the bridge with his stink pot, rakes for cockles at low water, fishes for salmon from the back of his boat and is a short tender ride at least 10 pubs. There's one of the finest seafood restaurants on the back beach...... I could go on. If I hadn't moved recently from Teignmouth I'd be moored up there instead of a eye watering expensive marina in sussex. Getting in and out isn't anymore trouble than some places subject to wind and tide. If you've not visited, spend a day down there and enjoy a classic Devon seaside town, I could go on but you may think me bias for some reason!

NB the showers of which you speak are now closed following a Fire in the Cafe above, also the Public Toilets are closed indefinitely as both the Showers and Toilets are or were situated underneath the Cafe.
Oh there are Porta Loos situated on thr Den now
 
I live in Teignmouth and agree it is a lovely old proper seaside town, great for family holidays with beach, popular children's play park on The Den (on the sea front), with the amusements on the pier, the nearby new Pavilions theatre, bar and cafe, etc., although I keep my boat, which has a deep keel, in Dartmouth. I believe there is an annual ballot for the limited number of available moorings in Teignmouth which takes place around this time of year and its usually oversubscribed. Details should be on the Teignmouth Harbour Commissioner's website or contact the Harbourmaster's office. There are limited facilities for small boats to come ashore, with mast down, just above the bridge at Chris Humphrey's Boat Yard, which is a secure site, next to the railway line and you can get to it by car on the Bishopsteignton to Teignmouth road (A381). You can see details of available moorings at Dartmouth on the DHNA website or call the Harbourmaster's office there for current availability. Good luck with finding somewhere suitable for you and your boat.
