Just a quick query as to what sealer you use (not varnish) im more interested in the colour finish prefered. Ta very muchly.

I've just done my boat for the first time...I was recommended Semco natural and I have been very pleased with the result. It was pretty easy to put on and dries quickly fro second coat

I have also just used semco for the first time - very impressed. Brought the teak back to a nice natural colour and very easy to apply. A bit pricey for a small tin, but I was surprised how far it went

I have been a Semco fan for some years now and it does give a lasting colour that suited my preference. It is personal choice preference though and I know quite few people that don't like sealers that look too bright.

There are some negatives with Semco though. If you apply it too thickly, the colour can be too yellow, the low viscosity means that it can splash off the end of the brush next to steps or swim platform which needs to be removed immediately or it will leave unsightly marks on adjacent gel coat. I found it needs two coats to work well but again it must be thin or it can yellow the black caulking between teak strips. The two coats means extra time and it has to be dry between coats. The sad part is it doesn't last for a whole season and by the time you need to reseal the teak, it will have worn on frequently trodden areas and it will have definitely turned yellow and look unnatural more like paint.

Last year I found a teak sealer of Danish origin in our local Force 4. A single coat, much easier application and an even nicer more natural (boat show) new colour as a result. Less expensive and far longer lasting. The only bad bit on my boat currently is the left over Semco on the swim platform, though it's still ok, I will remove it with the usual two part teak cleaners and replace with the Danish sealer this spring.

Nope, can't remember its name off hand but the main thing it is not oil!

I have some on the boat and could update here if anyone is interested.

Hi,

Yes please ,identifying that other treatment would be great if it's not too much aggro. I just had a quick look on Force 4 and the only thing I could see was called Owatrol.

I've been a fan of Semco, and have a big tin of it ready to use in the next couple of weeks on all the teak but am always keen to see what else is out there, especially if someone has tried it and got good results.

Thanks,

Andy

Yes wilco, I will be getting some more in the short term and will check on the actual tin at the weekend and come back to you. Although I Liked Semco, this is better for me.
Quicker, easier, nice colour (natural, but less orange than 'Teak Wonder') that lasts longer and less expensive iirc.

Bit of a no brainer really and I am happy to have made the change as Semco goes off so quickly.

Be back asap.:o

I use Delsolje pronounced deck-so-lay on the teak on my dinghy. Every year I just rub with wire wool and brush a coat over again. deksolje is like water so covers really quickly and virtually no prep or cleaning up. Not cheap though, and if you accidentally kick over a nearly full tin you will actually cry.

Well I checked the tin but guess what? they've changed the look with new colours and image.

As 'salar' said, "Deks olje" is what it is and for me better and easier to use than Semco.
Be aware though, there is a gloss and a satin finish. For decks, the satin is great for gunwhales or rubbing strakes, I would suggest the gloss.

Tin looks like this now:

There you go.:encouragement:

Interesting semco comes off with 2 part cleaner. Any one tried. Does it really come off ?

Yes, very easily with Wessex Chemicals. Mix 5:1 ratio and may have to apply Part 1 twice. By that I mean clean it, rinse off, clean again and rinse off again. Once the water runs clear in the rinse off, you'll know the teak is clean enough to for part 2 bringing up the colour to a lighter shade. Scummy looking small areas mean that it isn't quite clean yet and do a third time. Starbrite teak cleaner will also work but you have to use it neat and therefore not very economical.

Don't forget to brush it in lightly tho with a softish brush, one up from a paint brush.:encouragement:

Interesting thank you. My aft cockpit deck is a magnate for kids meals and the associated grease on the floor!

I have secco'd the table, but not the deck. Given you can get the stuff off I will probably give it a go. Flybridge boat so this area is not a "working deck" as such so I am not bothered re slipping and so on - just looking to make life a bit simpler.

Hi
Do you have any photo,s of the decks treated with Deks olje, been using semco last few years and as mentioned does not last a season. Be good to see before re coating , have you tried removing it with two part cleaner,s, just wondering if it comes off as easy as semco or is it similar to sadlins,
Thanks

Not tried yet as it's still so good, but I highlighted the Gloss/Satin mention above. Gloss would look rubbish on the decks. imho.

I haven't taken any pictures but I could as the swim platform is finished with Semco and needs doing again while the cockpit and stairs up are still good finished with Deksolje. :encouragement:

There might be a delay tho as swmbo is having a new hip on Thursday and I'll be away from the boat for a few weeks.:disgust:

Just a bit of a slant i need to make a piece of decking about 2 ft sq where can i get it pls

Hi Seastoke,

Can be a bit of a minefield but you can buy it almost everywhere. I would suggest your local marine carpenter as you only need a small area.
Local heros' Kwackers and Searush may be worth asking too.

You could even try TekDek or similar, some are very good now unless you must have the real thing.

A quick google came up with some other options too. Worth looking here for information and a guide::encouragement:

No problem, leaving doing the teak a bit longer this year , might go back to leaving them natural after the two part clean just to see how long they stay clean :), hope your swmbo op goes ok
