The varnish has worn through on the saloon flooring, with a couple of places where the wood has a chunk out (3mm hole, perhaps)

Any tips on preparation, filling and type of varnish to use? Was planning to strip with regular Nitromoors and a scraper, and use a wood floor varnish from Ronseal. However, the veneers used on the Moody are very thin, so am somewhat concerned I could b****r the whole thing.

What about the two holes? Will plastic wood work?

Thanks

If you can get the boards up....

... you will be able to do a better job by taking them home and drying them out thoroughly before you start.

Use the proper Brummers Stopper for your wood. The "Teak" colour will do for the darker colour (are you sure it isn't Cherry?) and "Natural Pine" for the Holly.

Provided that you can get the surface totally flat and dust free - use a "Tack rag" - a lnit free cloth soaked in turps for the final cleaning after sanding with ever increasing grades of wet&dry. Then apply the varnish in a dust free warm environment with a top quality brush. Thin coats are best and about six should suffice. If in doubt take the boards to a local French Polisher who should do a superb job for a reasonable price. They mostly work in acrylics and cellolose finishes these days and rarely in real shellac French Polish except for on antiques. We had two table tops (one quite big) renovated for £70 a couple of years ago and were staggered by the quality of the finish.

Hi JeremyF.
I think I would simply fill any minor imperfections and sand the whole floor lightly to provide a key for the new coating, plastic wood should be fine.

I would suggest that before doing anything with filler or varnish you give the floor a really thorough wash.

I mean hot water and a little bleach.

Repeat several times.

Its amazing how much dirt gets driven into the surface.
