Tattooing an anchor

I can't say that I particularly admire tattoos, but they obviously have a long tradition among sailors. I suspect that the chief reason for this is the average sailor's spectacular lack of ability to stay sober while in foreign ports. Some of our life models have elegant tattoos and it can be intriguing trying to include them in our drawings. Generally, a tattoo, unless in a hidden site, is intended to be seen and to invoke a reaction in the viewer, otherwise why would they do it? This being so, they shouldn't be surprised if sometimes the reaction they cause is a negative one, and I reserve the right to form my own opinion.

Tell me about it, I've had more bans than enough since December...for some reason folk seem to be more delicate and easily offended these days.

I often have to keep deleting txt and re wording just incase someone has a hissy fit and i get another unfair ban.

Where have the days gone where folk could have "Banter" and throw words around and laugh/joke about things?

It seems the more we evolve, The more our humour and broad shoulders dissappear. And men seem to have more estrogen than testosterone.

My understanding is that the Mods react to complaints from members whose ego has been bruised (I stand to be corrected). They, the Mods, then decide if the injury might be sufficient to merit a ban.

But it is not only egos that are bruised - I was wrapped across the knuckles when I initiated a thread on Viking Anchors and felt it was back in the times of the Spanish Inquisition as I was question of my commercial attachments, or not, to Viking. The initial complaint was raised by a member, who was (obviously) never identified by the Mods (rightly so) but I did have my suspicions. Now - why would a member raise the issue.

Sadly some members seem to think 'baiting' a member is fun and they took, childish ,pleasure in bouncing off each other's insults - the outcome has been - YBW is not critical to many - and they simply left. We now are not the recipients of their experiences and knowledge. As was said earlier, I think by Jimi - there are some very sad people about and many who need their egos polished in order to be comfortable.

OK, I'll correct you. The Mods react to reports from members. There is no "complaint" button, but there is a "report" one. Reporting a post brings a post to the moderators' attention. Your speculation about the reporters' motivations is just that - speculation.

Some moderators are also active forum users, and read threads without being prompted. I would think they sometimes take action against egregious transgressions of the forum rules without waiting for someone else to alert them.

I have no inside knowledge of how moderators reach their decisions, but I would think that they aren't basing decisions on perceived injury, but on the transgression (to what extent the post broke the forum rules), maybe also on perceived attitude of the transgressor, but surely also on past history of the transgressor. But yes, I agree with your point that the Mods make a decision on whether any action on their part is appropriate. It is absolutely their decision. All the Report button does is to bring a post to their attention. If a moderator bans a user, it isn't because someone reported him/her, but because that user broke the forum rules.

(where I use "moderators" or "mods" I am referring to anyone in the moderating / admin / management team. I don't know the detail of where decisions are made)

This last paragraph confuses me. You start by complaining that there has been a culture of personal insults that has impoverished us all by driving away valuable contributors. Then you appear to characterise anybody who tries to help stem that tide of abuse as "sad people...who need their egos polished".

I think the forum is better now since they took the tough stance on Civil Discourse. Much of the worst trolling has gone. There is much less personal abuse and rudeness between forum members. There is a mechanism that has helped this to happen - the moderation system. A vital part of that is the facility for members to report posts that they think go too far.
 
Jimi, surprise your fellow sailors friends tattooing this unknown anchor! If conveniently placed on a suitable part of the body, the red circled areas can be used to scratch one's skin, remove barnacles, etc; also the hidden seagull head (indicated by blue arrows) can be used to fool others into thinking it's an anchor whereas you have obviously tattooed a bird head.
A bit like that drawing of Sigmund Freud head with a naked woman concealed in the hair.

Maybe which colour of eye shadow would be better, Mediteranean blue or Atlantic grey

Are we that bored? Why not a few more threads on anchors, the rode, even keels maybe sailing in the North Sea - something. vaguely (if much criticised) relevant :)

I'm all for a little bit of light relief

I had simplistically and fondly imagined that The Lounge had been specially constructed for irrrelevant or irreverent threads and posts.

I obviously got that one badly wrong
