Tamd61a strange oil pressure issue

Have recently bought a new boat with above engines. Engine survey came back good but on maiden voyage a strange thing came to light. Weather on Saturday was horrendous but made passage to great Yarmouth all good on fly bridge apart from windswept and very wet lol. Once clear of bridges decides to take sanctuary below and noticed stb engine had oil pressure of 60 psi and port was only 30. Rev port engine and it increased to 35 but would not drop below thirty. I'm thinking can't be mechanical or would surely drop to zero at idle. Engine sounded fine no loss of oil or anything and temps on both engines at 87 ish. Doubt gauge at fault as showed 60 psi on cold start next morning. Thinking pressure relief valve but it has four one in sump for piston cooling. Any one know if any one is particularly prone to failing. Thanks guys in advance

It could be the pressure sensor. I had a low reading on a TAMD41B about 20 psi too low. Also when the pressure gauge rose from zero to cold working pressure it did so in jerks unlike the other engine where the pressure rose smoothly. A new sensor fixed it.
VP charge a lot for the replacement so get the partcode then enquire with Walker Plant who distribute for Swedish Lorry Parts. Swedish Lorry Parts Approved Stockist Walker Plant Services Ltd. It cost me about £40 a saving of well over £100.

Thanks for that. I will try and do a mechanical check in a couple of weeks. Just obviously a worry until fault is confirmed. My thoughts that idle pressure OK it has to be something like that

Agree it’s a good idea to swap over the oil senders. There are two on each engine remember.
Also thought I’d mention that these have a filter oil by pass when cold...as far as I know. Just a thought. Doubt it’s that though.
worst case is that your low engine has thinned oil and full of diesel. Let’s not think that way though.

I agree in an ideal world swapping bits over would work but not much access down the stbd side engine on a princess 385
I agree. But it is possible. I did this very thing a few years ago on this very boat. The throttle assembly holder needs to come off. The engine cover...and you can just reach down to it. Not easy, but possible. Not as bad as changing the bloody oil filter or reaching the aft cooler drain plug every year. I’m sure you know what I mean. On the upside. What a boat the 385 is. Incredible hull on her and relentless power on tap with the 61s. The imminent worry with ours now...is the soon to be done, water pumps. Wish me luck !!

Done the oil px sender on my stbd 61 in my P385.

Not the worst job by a long way, but you’ll have to do it all by feel cos you won’t be able to see it! It’s the larger size fwd sender - the smaller, aft sender is the low px switch. It has two wires secured with knurled thumbscrews, which will be far too tight to loosen easily!! ;)

Well done Ross ,the slender hull on the 385 sure does make the starboard motor a challenge .

I would like to install Oil Pressure gauges on the bridge deck instrument panel as the only info.I have there is the rev counters.
Can I just take a feed from the cockpit gauge to feed those above? Boat is Fairline Turbo 36 with TAMD61A's

Thanks
Trevor

All the wiring is there , I’ve done this mod a hundred times for myself and clients .
You will need new senders as the single station ones won’t give the correct reading , that will cost , you will also require comparable gauges , I’d recommend either volvos own or look at VDO , do not be tempted to use anything else.

You will see the black 16 pin loom plug into what you already have , peel back the rubber sheath to find the rest of the loom .

From memory the temp gauge if your fitting duplicate gauge is light brown , there is also a dark brown , The oil pressure is light blue , all from memory so check your hand book the wiring diagram is there .

You will need an earth , black and an ignition live from switch , blue with red trace to each gauge .

Or go on the hunt for a duplicate of what you have downstairs , I do have one I’d sell with temp, oil and volt meter in , pm me for details of this .
