Or just make sure he keeps non-dom status and has the boat registered offshore. He must have some sort of US residency, as he doesn't have the visa issues that Magic Carpet do.
The other possibility would be to persuade HMRC that all he did was repair the boat. I rather doubt that those who break their boats abroad pay VAT on the repairs when they came back.
