Cruise Reports Taking our yacht to Sweden for the summer - any 50m marinas?

When you reach further into the Hardangerfjord, you should be OK to anchor up (or find a longside quay) and take the trip up to the glacier Folgefonna ...

And if my recollection is right, they will just have opened the road (too much snow to open before now, so opening set to 27th April) in to the skicentre, so you can do some glacier summer skiing ..

More stuff in the links below ...

Thanks Alf,

We're about to drop on off at the airport, and pick up two more tomorrow...

ALT... Hoping to see you too?

Rob. :)

UN.BELIEV.ABLE.

OH MY GOD, TODAY WAS FUN

Okay, I can't turn off the pink, but today, I took my own boat out to sea, and brought her back again (the VHF systems failed, we had to come back - and no, a £50 radio isn't what we were dealing with)...

Anyway. Zero Bowthruster. 100% awesome docking.

I'm so happy! 163' of ship.

And I drove it.

Bummer, your AIS wasn't working then, didn't see your departure. Where did you go and what was it like at the helm? She's a big tub indeed.

On a side note re: bow
thruster......Isn't your boat fitted with pod-type drives for holding station? Would you need a bow thruster?

Double edit....AIS was working, marine traffic wasn't lol.

Marine Traffic did track us... If I could make the pictures on this work, I'd show you the screenshots....!

Maybe this is it.... https://photos.app.goo.gl/ocHiSteGCpsS5NSn1

I cannot say, how lovely it was to drive.

It's very responsive. I can turn her in about 1.6 boat lengths, at 50% revs.

And the Bowthruster is not yet in. It was so beautiful, I had wind against tide, and still, mastered it. Even with the dock lines that weigh about 2kgs per meter, and a crew that was assembled for the first time, yesterday. All but two of them, it was their first time on the boat.

(From the first sea trial and survey completion last week, before I arrived).

How cool. Feels amazing. Thanks YBW for hosting a place for me to share an absolutely blissful boating moment (they're not all like that) with a community of fellow travelers/people who "get it"!!!

I edited my post as you posted, AIS was tracked. Glad you finally got to "play" with your new toy, must have been excellent. :encouragement::cool:

This is NOT our engine, but it's close to what it sounds like. I think ours sounds better. I'll try record it tomorrow,. It I don't know how I'll upload it here...!

And here, is the same sound, of our crazy dinghy motor.

Again, NOT OURS, But the same:. https://youtu.be/OrYeGWpxCmM

Might help set the scene as to what today was like for me.

Also, i got to drive the 7m crane. Only to put the boarding passerelle back out to the dock....

It was a lovely day.

Indeed it is.

But the azimuth pods go down another 2.6m under the boat, when deployed. And are 800hp each. So are pretty useless in most of the places I want to go. I'll try get a pic here, we only have about 1.10m clearance here, at low water, and it's a lovley deep berth.

:) Bowthruster is already aboard.

I've been following this thread with interest, as I suspect have many others. Congratulations on getting her out to sea and many thank for sharing the process.

Glad to share. It's been a dream of mine since I was about 7, and caught in a hurricane (Tropical Cyclone) to own a big "anywhere, any time" ship, and drive it places!

This week, I did half that. And it was amazing. :)

There's a lot to do, from here, in terms of making her look a bit nice, as well as ready to chase storms and help people (being at sea, hearing and relaying maydays, to the nearest Navy 700 miles away (and hearing distress calls from Navy ships too!), impacted me for sure); but those finishing touches are pleasing window dressings from my perspective.

I. Drove. My. Own. Ship.

:)

25 years in the making (since that storm) the rest of the refit will be relatively swift, I think. :)

Thanks for the encouragement. I worry that this is all self interest and not that interesting to others at times. But if there's a small chance, it's not wasted, then I'm delighted. After all... How common does this sort of weird stiff happen, with someone willing to post and share?!

Anyway... My smile was about 100' across. The amazing dinghy I bought should, if it worked, be able to get across that in about a nano-second.

Sadly, in January, the engine block froze and cracked. Rookie error.

The saga continues...!

You drove a ship! You parked a ship!
Words fail me.....:encouragement:

Me too Bouba. Ive not stopped smiling ever since.

Partially speechless. Partially gloating with a self-disbelief. It was so cool. The crew were so nice about it. I think my happiness was contagious, as everyone was smiling like Cheshire cats, all though dinner.

What a lovely day.

Its great to hear you talking about it, and its obvious that its something you take great pleasure from, just goes to show that if you enjoy boating ( is it still boating when you own a ship?) It doesnt matter how big or small the vessell thw reason we do it is the same - because it keep you happy.

Have fun- keep us posted on your progress

I now have visions of Saint Christopher sporting a full wrap-round suit of lumishores anchored off Sant Antoni de Portmany,Ibiza infront of Café Mambo when Radio 1 weekend is on lol.:encouragement:

LOL, do tell, Freudian slip or spell checker?
If neither, we need some pics, 'cause this is the sort of stuff Google comes up with... :D
