Tacking, Goin\' About, or Move Yer Ass

What do you call when going about, if anything, for the benefit of the crew?

We generally rely on ESP ourselves, there just being me, wifey, Ship's Catty and Ship's Parrot.

1) Er, don't light that b***Dy thing now, going to tack soon, followed by 'going'

2) Do you want to drive or shall I (if it's blowing, winch muscle needed.)

3) Throw that bl***y thing over and take the wheel, time to go

or excuse me dear, ready about, lee hoh........get that ******g sheet in, NOW!

And subtle (and less subtle) variations of the above,

In cruising mode its

"We'll need to tack soon...........Right lets tack now............Ready.....Ready about......Helm's a lee......Let Fly....Lee Ho......"

In racing mode it's more like "GO!" /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Bear away a bit to put a bit more speed on

I say "ready to go about"

The crew look at me "quizically"

I put the helm hard over, then feel the boat through the wind and say "lee ho"

The crew look at me perplexed and say "Why?"

The jib backs

The main flaps

The boat stops

I remember why we dont tack.

LEO

I used to say Lee-ho as well but someone told me I was wrong and that the expression was actually Leo i.e. no h. I didn't believe it until they got out some ancient sailing almanac that even confirmed their story. But I reckon Leo sounds naff so I don't say it. If anything I usually just say "here we go" cos that covers a multitude of possibilities including something about to go wrong (which it usually does).

Excuse me dearest would you mind pressing the buttons? I'll handle the bits of string. Don't spill your drink or slip into it.

Re: LEO

As a Yorkshireman it's genetically impossible for me to say 'Lee-Ho!" as the aspirant letter H does not exist in our language, so I always say "Lee-Oh!".

It is my understanding that "Lee-Oh!" is the traditional shout of the nauticalist, as is "Gybe-Oh!"

Perhaps the confusion came about because of that place Down South, what's it called, 'Westward Ho!' ?

As for the original comment of 'Move Your Ass!', why would anyone want to keep a donkey onboard a yacht unless it was a Noah's Ark Tribute Expedition?

As I mostly sail single handed as Skipper I call "Ready About" and then press the buttons and as Crew I swear at the Skipper for never giving me enough time to get ready.

Re: Tacking, Goin\' About, or Move Yer Ass

Good question Cat, I have often thought about this myself.

If its just SWMBO and myself, I grunt a few signals and she understands them, or I do all the work myself.

WIth others on board, I have tended to stick to what I learned as a kid, ie Ready About to give sufficient notice to prepare, then Lee Oh and turn the helm at the same time.

However when I did this at the helm of a boat owned by a very exerienced skipper with commercial YM quals etc, he corrected me. Apparently I should be saying

Ready About to prepare
Helms A Lee when starting to turn
Lee Oh when the boat is head to wind through the turn, so the crew know to the business with the sheets.

I conformed during the rest of the trip with them, but have to confess to falling back to my old ways afterwards.

If there is a recognised standard, I would be please to learn it.

<hr width=100% size=1>I can't be bothered with a footnote - it's usually rubbish anyway.

BigNick says -
"Ready About to prepare
Helms A Lee when starting to turn
Lee Oh when the boat is head to wind through the turn, so the crew know to the business with the sheets."

I quite like this because it makes it clear what is going on, especially with inexperienced crew who often dump a sheet the minute the helm is put over and/or they hear the call, "Lee Oh". If I used this on our boat, it would prevent the mistake of letting go the genny before it's done it's thing by going aback and getting us through the wind. "Lee Oh" would be a clear signal to sort the sheets and tack the sail. At present the whole operation is accompanied by lots of, "No, not yet," and "Now!"
I think I'll incorporate this into our normal practices.

Re: Tacking, Goin\' About, or Move Yer Ass

Sounds like we are much the same as normally just wife and myself so is ESP, odd warning sort of informal "think we will tack soon" or I do it all myself.

With an unknown crew or if helming another's boat I usually give the warning "Ready to tack", then "Tacking" as the helm starts to go over.

Interesting replies, especially Rob's comment on the use of "Leo". Have had a short browse on the internet to see if I can find that but no luck so far except that "lee oh" is pronounced as that. But haven't given up.

Thanks

ACtually if you really know what you're doing and want to keep the crew on their toes why say anything at all?

Instead of calling "Duck!" as Julie suggests, perhaps just think it /forums/images/icons/smile.gif.
