I'm in the process of fitting a Makuni water heater. Just to be ultra safe, I want to put something between the exhaust and the underside of the deck in my cockpit locker. I remember years ago demolishing a single garage made of tImber and "asbestos". Some of the asbestos I used over the years when soldering. But none left now! Is it still available and does it have a proper name? Thanks

Cheapest way to get a small piece I suspect is to pop in to Wickes or B & Q and get one of their boards as used for tiling in wet areas. It's called Aquapanel and looks like asbestos and has many of the same properties, i.e. fire-proof, but contains no asbestos fibres which is good as it is now a banned product. Comes in a range of thickness's. See here for info: http://home-and-garden.become.co.uk...w-900-x-d-12-5mm--compare-prices--sc320053169

Ive got some "white stuff" that looks like asbestos and is used in chimneys, backs of fires etc. Its fairly fragile, you can cut it with a stanley knife. I had to buy a half sheet 4' X4' to do a little job. What size do you want? Its about 6 mm thick

Two types, I recall, were 'Masterboard' (generic term - mineral fibre board); which I think might have been restricted to inside use because of poorer moisture resistance. The outdoor stuff was harder and more brittle and might have been 'Supalux' but the generic term was GRC (glass reinforced concrete). Both Masterboard and Supalux were easily sawn and fixed and were commonly used to increase fire resistance in ducts, garage ceilings etc. where plasterboard might have sagged. A lot of external cladding panels are GRC as are fibre cement roofing slates. You could go down to a building supply yard and ask for a sample slate, Turners or Speakers Eternit or similar.
Its a while and I may have got the properties of the proprietary brands confused but both would do your job and are common building materials.
There is also a vermiculite based board used behind fireplaces etc. Any fireplace or gas fire shop will have small bits of scrap.
