For those in the know, whats the food like at the lightship looked at the web site and the burns night menu looked interesting just wondered what the quality and quantity where like?
Quantity always been average to good.
Food is robust bar quality.
Baxters Cock A Leekie out of the tin. Cant mess that up
Better if they are offering Cullen Skink or similar, cos I have never seen that available as a commercial offering.
No one can screw up microwaving a tesco haggis surely?
Mashed tattie and swede. Easy peasy
Tipsy Laird. Some opportunity to screw up if it isnt Brake Brothers. Many recipes out there for this. Try the BBC one.
Nairns Oatcakes and Orcadian Cheddar, Strathdon Blue. Couldnt get the sheeps cheese this year.
The coffee and some cask strength Aberlour A'Bunadh for me,
Full Circles Burns Night is all done from first principles with fresh ingredients. Not to mention nothing younger than a 10 year old malt in the cooking.
being from the emerald isle i have to object to the use of that inferior liquid from up north. cant have it in the house if they found out would never let me back in the country.
I will stick with Bushmills as my favoured tipple
I'll second Jim's view on SYH. Always been plenty of it and no complaints. The meal we had in the function room below decks for a Moody Owners do was very good with less of it but higher quality and presentation.
Upstairs they tell you it will be 45 minutes and then bring it in 20.
I have Irish, Welsh, Japanese and Canadian as alternatives in stock......and Bushmills not necessarily the best, just the best known.
Got a drop of Poteen (bouble distilled) too for those raucous moments.
a friend for life, I will let you off with your earlier blasphamy, as Bushmills holy sanctury was only 30 miles from where i once resided I have a strong almost magnetic feeling of being close to home when I drink it (thats my excuse for a tipple or four)
I look forward to a long and meaningful discussion in the near furture Jim to broaden our understanding of the water of life

Good decent, honest food - well perpared.
The menu would struggle to fill an A4.
I´ve been goingv there for about 4 years now, and it´s still the same people running it. Good thing - they get to know you, you get to know them.
At the Lightship there seems to be a different person behind the bar every time I visit.
Different chef too - but the result is always the same... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
what happened with the "club house" being built behind the lightship and the "rumours" that she was leaking like a sieve...think they were mentioned on here...
about a year or so ago bilges full
they found it when they had more complaints than usuall about their weak beer /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Early last year the Lightship started to leak when an exceptional tide coupled with a busy weekend and the selling of much booze exposed a hole in the hull. I was there when several fire engines arrived, presumably to pump.
There has been much scaffolding and such around the hull since so presumably this is now sorted.
The club house staff change at least once a year so you never really know what you are going to get in the way of food, service and welcome.
New bar manager & staff in place now - same chap as 3 (I think) ago; ate there the other night & decent food. Will see what its like as the season progresses - was always OK when he was there before.
