The question is whether yacht racing is a sport, or a competition of who can spend the most money and use the most resources. I see a future where individuals realize that global warming will have to solved by their own behaviour, rather than blaming governments.

A simple solution to keep racing alive is then to make design rules which make the boats and equipment more robust, and shift the emphasis back to crew skills rather than money, technology and extreme weight saving. It still will not be cheap!

You mean like the production boat class of the Mini Transat (6.50m long).

Theoretically rating systems like IRC are designed to accomodate those ideas. Built into IRC is an allowance for boat age and weight. The problem is of course that IRC cannot compensate for the fact that faster is better most of the time.
