I have just bought a new Suzuki 2.5hp 4 stroke.

Put the oil, put the petrol in, filled a large water tub, started first pull....

There is a splutter of water coming out of the leg if you add a few revs..
But nothing at tick over....

I stopped the engine straight away and rang the supplier.....they said it is fine...and Suzuki tells them its fine.....but I am not sure...

The instruction book say there should be water !!!!

What do I do now....??

You will often find that the water intake is resricted when running an outboard in a tank - Try running it on your tender where you should have a better flow.

I had a 2hp Suzuki and I was told the splutter out of the leg is all you get. It didn't seem to overheat (run it for up to an hour on occasions). But I did find the miniscule size of the water flow rather disconcerting - I am told the water ways in small suzukis are very small.

Are you sure that you are not just seeing a tell-tail, and that the main water outlet is under water through the exhaust to make it quieter? Or am I talking rubbish as usual?

suzy 2.2 2 stroke, small splutter only, but that is normal.
had a case of salt blockage last year, had to undo the block off the leg, 4 bolts only and the waterways are only small.

Likewise just got one very recently and noticed exactly the same in the dustbin at home. However on the dinghy there was no problem & several weeks down the line it is doing very well. A bit of a backward step having to run it in as per Makers instructions, but our dinghy is not for planing anyway, so no big deal. It is a big improvement on the original Mariner 4hp, 2 stroke which was rather heavy & a right pain to start. The only thing I do not like is that you can't attach one of those nice little flushing muffs to the water intake, to flush through with FW. Just have to use the nearest 45gall oildrum/dustbin then!

Mine is exactly the same. I asked my supplier and was told that is perfectly normal.

Just to add my experience to this thread...
I used to have a Seagull which I sold on eBay as it was a pain to start. After some research, I bought a Suzuki 2.5 4-stroke and it worked fine for an hour or so. It then wouldn't start, so after an hours rowing I got back to shore and dropped it into the dealer.
A couple of weeks later he told me that they'd had quite a few in and that there was a problem with the carb jet. Apparently it was set-up for Japanese climate not European(!). Whilst testing my engine, the man from Suzuki let it bounce off the transom and it is now in the bottom of Poole harbour!

I was then provided with a new engine, but before I could start running-it in again, I received a letter from Suzuki saying that there was a recall on the model to replace the water pump. I duly dropped it in and assumed it was ready for my second trip. This time, it started with lots of smoke, but then wouldn't restart. I returned to the dealer who will look into the problem and also advised it will need a service as the 3 months were up.

I hope this is a rare experience, and I know the problems are really with Suzuki, but I've had 6 visits to the dealer and 2 different engines for only 1trip of 2 hours on the water!

Bought a new Suzuki 2.5 4 stroke last year. Almost immediately it was recalled for "water pump" modifications, but I hadn't noticed any problems!

Is yours newer than mine, i.e. with the mod already fitted?

Suggest you check with supplier if this was pre or post recall.

Just bought a Johnson 2.5hp which is a rebadged Suzuki and identical in every way as far as I can see.
Same story with sparse outflow, same advice from supplier.

My next trip....
Tested the engine in a water bin for 15 mins - worked fine. Laid it on its side for the trip to the harbour (on the handle as described in the manual), put it on the boat in the water...would not start despite an hours worth of pulling!
My only guess is that this engine cannot be laid on it's side!
Anyone else had this problem??

Hi,, you must.! lay a 4-stroke on the tiller, for storage or transporting, or the engine oil gets into the barrel.. same for all 4-strokes.! also most of the cooling water comes out under water with the exhaust.. hope this helps..? rgrds

I have had a 2.2 two stroke and all that did was sputter, no probs, my 2.5 is the same, IT IS NORMAL.
I am a lazy sod and leave it in the car boot, lying on the tiller handle as per instructions, if you lie it the other way the oil goes down the crank breather and out. Now if I leave in the boot for two weeks or more, when i come to start it, it smokes like a [--word removed--] for about 30 secs, obviously oil is getting past the rings whilst its on its side. Not a problem just an observation.

This is a bit of a thread revival but possibly not a record.

I just came by a barn find Suzuki 2.5 that had been used for two hours in 2008. It's a 2007 engine.. threw in some petrol and stood it in the wheelie bin started after a few pulls. Idles and starts fine.

However not a drop of water from the telltale outlets on the leg.

I have another identical unit also from 2007 and it gives a goodish stream...

Does anyone know for certain that most cooling water does come out the end of the leg?

The impeller and water pump seem to be fine, albeit only about 4 blades on the impeller.

But looking at this thread my new one may have been on the wrong side of a recall!. So can anyone suggest how I could tell the difference between the old and upgraded pump?.

Most of the water does go inside the leg, the telltale is just an offshoot.
I've had one apart.
Thanks for that, I have let it run and idle for about half an hour and still not a drop from the telltales. I might take the head off and see if there is a fly nest or something blocking it up....

Looking online it does seem there should be some drop of water from the telltales...

I have a 2019 2.5hp Suzuki. Water pisses out of the tell tale. When mounted on the edge of my workbench with the leg in a bucket, it goes about 6 feet if you pick up the revs (and about 3 feet at idle)

Yep that's what I expected. I get a fair bit from the other one which I have concerns about...I'll take the head off tomorrow when I get to my tools...
