Thanks all for your many replies.

To answer some of the queries.

DavidTav - "Is this what the forums us for?"

Well, er, yes I think so. Don't post if you don't like my post or me but thanks loads to all who did I really appreciate your help.

For the multiple people who basically said "what do you expect for a 20 year old boat!"

Fair point, I think I have offered "top dollar" after some negotiation as the condition of the model is appreciably better than many others I looked at even to my untrained eye so I did have high expectations but a fair point it is 20 years old. I am re-assured by the joint conclusions that the rudder issue is minor.

The Eber was on the inventory and was verbally confirmed as working so I think it is reasonable to make this a discussion point. It seems sometimes the repairs are sadly expensive.

Damo - "If that is the only three things.." - There were many other minor points but I am happy to discount them as costs are trivial or again to be expected on a boat this old. I couldn't post the whole 24 pages !

Dogwatch - "Gas etc" - I'll renew the hose - thanks for the tip about the regulator I will have a look at that too. I realise this is an easy job but probably will get stuck with getting someone “official” for insurance purposes.

OcklePoint "off thread" - Yes you are being damn nosey /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif but I am more than happy to tell all AFTER I have formally concluded this sale. Send me a PM as a reminder and I will give you info when I can.

Bajansailer - "spelling /pedantry" - I guess you are right but I woz dragged up wiv a komprehensive edukation so eye am not to good at the spollings meself. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif More seriously I personally, shock horror "sometimes" fit quick posts in at work in between bits and bobs and don't get as much time to proof read as I would like. Your re-assurance not to worry about the rudder is appreciated.

NFCN - "luxury heater..." to right ! Heater, running water etc are all part of the luxury we are buying into when compared to the 26 foot mono we have come from. Not to mention the heater being a deal clincher for SWMBO !

Thanks again for all your help – I will certainly post updates when I get a bit further not to mention loads of “Now I have brought toy x and it has stopped working what is the best way to bodge it” questions. One of the reasons behind our upgrade is to gain experience of some of these systems which are more complicated that the basic boat we have come from. We thought is might be a good idea to learn how to bleed a diesel engine in the Solent over the next 5 years rather than halfway across the pacific on a lee shore /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I feel I should explain my remark. Obviously the forum is here to answer boaty issues and I have found the forum invaluable myself on many occasions, but it seemed to me that the original poster had copied quite a lot of a professional survey into his post rather than simply ask the salient points. I do find it difficult to understand why anyone would ask members of a web forum for additional advice rather than the professional surveyor that he is no doubt paying handsomely. I wish him well in his purchase and apologise if my post appeared brusque.

No harm done (from my perspective as the original poster) and I know how easy it is to be taken "out of context" on web postings.

As I said in my first post, I am pleased with the surveyor and only pasted a little of his 24 pages. I guess it was second opinions and putting it all in context which I was after. If this was you and a boat you were buying what would you do ? type stuff. And I got some great and helpful feedback. In a way the surveyor can't do that.

E.g. the gas hoses - the Surveyor has to say get a Corgi specialist etc but in reality (insurance aside) it's a 10 minute job with a bit of hose that anyone can do.

It's a big committment for us and ultimately any re-assurance that we are doing the right thing is welcome as I right the cheque with all the zeros on.

All the best

MacMan,

One comment/observation.....

suggest when you take the boat into your ownership that you test/get tested the batteries as a priority.... its entirely possible that the Eber problem is down to the batteries not really being man enough for the job anymore.... equally possible that they are just fine.... but worth checking....

These are not material defects and given the minor nature of these faults no reduction should be requested or required, indeed you should be thanking your lucky stars your dream boat is virtually unblemished..... a highly unusual state of affairs in the boating world, I might add!

The starboard rudder had begun to split, so I fixed it, it is now stronger than the port rudder, but not as pretty. I intend to sort this, by carrying out the same repair on the port.

So your are going to make the port rudder as ugly as the starboard one then? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Let us know what the outcome is.

As a matter of interest, and somewhat "off thread" , and only if you don't mind me asking etc, do you know how long "your" Prout was on the market, and what sort of percentage, if any, did you agree to pay under the asking price ?

I wonder what the market is generally doing, is it a buyers market at present etc

Nosey, I know,

Thanks

OK so now the deal is all done I am happy to share. As I said I would.

We paid 90% of the original asking price. But I think this was a very high asking price and we know that even with this reduction we were still paying top dollar - BUT it is an excellent example and was way ahead of many of the examples we looked at. The survey results bear out our initial thoughts. And we are happy.

It was on the market for about 6 months. He had allegedly turned down an offer for £1k less than we paid when it first went on.

We saw plenty of other examples that would have a much longer to do list with them - some of these have definitely been on for over a year and many have had a offer price reduction. A couple of these I wouldn't touch with a barge pole...

I would say it's a buyers market but ultimately this lead us to get a VERY nice example rather than a bargain.

The antifouling was completed this week and we hope to get her launched on Friday.

Very very excited but SWMBO very very fed up with antifouling - she is a star but I have a job at the mo and she doesn't.

If you want to know/see more then have a look at my blog and/or feel free to PM me.
