Gusting 50 -60 knots on the East Coast all day (Saturday).

Felixstowe container port closed for the last two days. Even empty containers blown over !

Hope there's none of us out there.

Regards,

My hat comes off to the lovely ketch that passed Toward Sailing Club, Argyll at 5.00pm Saturday. I had just measured gusts of 45kts + at the clubhouse when these guys beat past using storm main and inner cutter, heavily reefed jib and reefed mizzen. They were past 45 degrees in some gusts. Looked awesome from Toward

Oh and just ahead of them was one of the classic schooners (was it Spirit of Scotland?)

Respect!

Way to go!

We travelled from St Malo-Plymouth last night/this morning on the ferry. The swell had been running since Thursday when we travelled across and had built up considerably along with the wind which was totally streaking and flattening the water. Was OK tho, ship was plunging in and out of holes from the swell and big waves were breaking but for a relatively small ferry was not too bad (lots of mal de mer with fellow passengers, fortunately we escaped its wrath but the colourful carpets and bright lights on lower decks were enough to keep us in the duty free shop for only 5 minutes!) We saw no yachts at all thank goodness and felt quite grateful that we were not out there in a yacht of any size.

Must have been a great sight !

Wished i'd seen it !

Reminds me of a quote from an old windjammer skipper when someone asked him if he believed in god.

Answer was ' In fair weather it's easy to be an atheist '

Probably not a good motto to have hanging over the door in a sailing school.

Regards,

Working on the boat sitting in a cradle balanced on transporter at top of Exe. As the whole thing rocked I tried not to look worried as SWMBO looked very worried! Why did we book the launch for tomorrow?? Sort of guarenteed the gales when I booked the slot weeks ago...

We're hiding in Shotley Marina at present, waiting for a window to leg it to Woodbridge and home. Conditions looking right on Tuesday by current forecasts, but who knows?!

Am writing this at a heel angle of about 7 degrees, tied to a pontoon, with the warps creaking like God knows what. Channel Weather Buoy showing 38 knots, having peaked at 48 overnight.

It's spooky to see Felixstowe prectically deserted with all the container ships moored alongside.

All quite fun, really - not the case if we'd made a dash for the Deben entrance, though, so also grateful that we stayed put - Shotley does have one of the nicest bars on the East Coast.

Re:was 50kts out in the Solent today....

Went down to Portsmouth to see if the boat was still on the mooring! She was & I contemplated going out to the mooring to check all was well but the wind was blowing offshore from the boatyard and the boat is a fair way out and was bouncing around a lot. So best case it would have been a very wet journey back in, and I started wondering if I would be able to row upwind if the engine failed. So I thought, no not worth the risk or discomfort and got back in the car, it looked a bit too dodgy.

Hope it all calms down for next weekend, I hope to move the boat from Portsmouth to the Hamble & wouldn't relish doing that in 50kts.

Chris

I\'ve just cancelled?

I was to move a new boat from the Hamble to Ramsgate Tuesday night - Wednesday.
Not now I'm not. I'm not going to risk a new boat in those (predicted) conditions.

Discretion is the better part of valour!

Re:was 50kts + out in the Solent today....

I was just glancing through John Rousmanière's book Fastnet Force 10 and there was a photo in there of one of the American boats with its storm spinnaker up in 50 knots of wind...! It didn't look that small to me.
