Sunsail: not First Choice - more Last Resort

Re: crap conditions - keep up with it

I don't put up with crap conditions just because I'm a student. Especially when Sunsail still got the same money as they would normally. However, as I've said before, the only complaint that I could level was that the heads smelt a bit.

I really don't want to get into a debate on student funding, I'm sick to death of that subject.
But do you really begrudge the union rent free buildings when it provides so many student support and councelling services that are not provided by the university?

Re: crap conditions - keep up with it

When I was a student we match raced Firefly's which were maintained on a shoestring. Perhaps it is me but it is tough to comprehend a university/student union funding a small number of people to compete in a round the island race. Moreover, as you proudly point out not even corporate sponsored but paying corporate entertainment prices. Amazing!

Re: crap conditions - keep up with it

The union aren't paying for the RTI race, we've got separate sponsorship and we're not racing with Sunsail either.

We do one funded yacht event a year, the BUSA yacht championships which is held each easter (low season) and contributes BUSA points for the overall sporting competition. Most of the year we do exactly what you did, team race laser 2s which we have to maintain ourselves.
We aslo make a little bit of money from running an event at out local pond and inviting students from around country.
Can't understand all the flack I'm getting for being enterprising and getting in as much sailing as I can.

Hear, hear. Leave off, guys - I was a penniless student once, and I expect many of you were as well, probably at a time when the Government paid your tuition fees and maybe even gave you a grant as well.... The average student now graduates with debts of about £12,000 after a three year degree course. I'm not sure I would go to university if I were 18 now - even in the '70s I had to work through the holidays to keep my head above water, financially.
