Sunken boat project.

We have all been here/there, several times.
Seemed a good idea at the time ?, if its any consolation at all............you are in good company.
Have always suspected that if our "Man on the Clapham Omnibus" gets anywhere near an absolute steal.....and no yacht broker, car dealer, estate agent or solicitor has not taken advantage of an off the record phone call to nick it, Caveat Emptor. :)

I’d try and flog the boat as it is, but you’ll be dealing with absolute pond life offering you about £2.50.

If you fit the new engine you’ll have to sell the boat for massively more, which will make it much harder to shift unless you do a massive restoration job to get it back to like new. And even then it’s always going to be the boat that sunk unless you rename it and erase its history.

Saying that if my experience of selling a newly new high HP outboard without any rigging as a private seller is anything to go by, that’s gonna be a nightmare to shift as well 😂 would the dealer take it back?

Not quite sure I agree with you.

If someone wants to re-power their boat then rigging kit and labour costs all have to be taken into account.

If it's an existing honda then the throttle and wiring harness are the same so its just a connection job.

Otherwise the throttle and harness is about £900 which in the big scheme of things when fitting a £15k plus engine are all part of the deal.

I bought then engine at a very good price - so there is margin in it for me and a bargain for the buyer too!

I agree that there are idiots who try it on regarding price but I'm well versed in dealing with them!

The dealer would no doubt offer an engine to anyone "at a very good price". Expecting, as a private seller, to be able to sell the engine at more than the dealer charged you is optimistic, to say the least.

The only flaw in your argument is that you don't know what I paid for it....

"I suspect that there's precious little margin left for the dealer in my case as I'm getting a hefty discount on list price.

I'm getting a reasonable discount as this is one of the last "old style" versions.

Adding the PDI cost locally means it's still a very good deal.

It will be costing me around £13k."

Even if you paid less, you're a private seller, selling an old style engine, expecting to make a profit on it, above what you paid a dealer for it, good luck with that.

Fair enough.

But given that a new one is around £18k then I believe there is a margin, however small.

And, being located in "boat central" i.e. the Hamble, there is a reasonable chance of selling.

I'll update this post when I've sold it, until then, the jury's out.

Good luck with it, if you break even money wise, maybe lose time and effort and a bit of interest on money won't be a bad outcome, but I suspect the best will be just the loss of imagined big bucks profit..
I wish you well.

I can only hope.

Overall I'll be OK as even as a project boat, I'll clear any loss on the new outboard.

With the world in it's current state the market is depressed, I just need a sunny period and the buyers will be out.

Interesting project

I've basically calculated my hours as "free" i.e. the value of my boat has increased from €10k purchase to about €20k current market value (your point about getting someone on a nice sunny day with a flat sea is very valid!). I've spent roughly €10k on her, all on parts, but put in countless hours (hull back to gelcoat, epoxied // cleaned out fuel tank // rewired entire boat // removed engine, repainted // changed transom assembly) over the 5 years.

I can only hope.

Just keep this thread going.....show all your work and illustrate with lots of photos....so when you sell, you are not only up front and honest....but you will have this whole diary to reassure, and add value, to the new owner

Update

I had the local Honda agent visit with his laptop and he's done a full scan of the engine.

ZERO fault codes.

He was expecting a whole list of them and was genuinely amazed.

The voltage issue on the trim switch is apparently due to water in the main power leads.

I'll order a set and hand over to the eventual buyer

All cushions have been cleaned of diesel contamination. It's taken 24 days of constant dehumidification to dry the foam. 3 are still being dried.

I've put the covers on and all the upholstery is look good. A major expense if these required replacement.

I've taken the advert for the outboard down as I'm now selling as a complete boat.

Cleaning and getting the chart plotter, VHF, nav lights wired up again is the priority.

I'll get a 5 way fuse board to connect them up.

Essentially, the boat will be usable immediately with wiring replacement at the new owners pace

Cushion photos below!

I checked the anchor chain and there's about 20 metres of 8mm I stalled

I've reduced that to 7 metres and taken 18 kg weight off the bow.

This will help as she's very bow heavy.

Hence why I do threads on my boats. Very handy for prospective buyers to see what’s been done warts and all! Better than a file with a few service invoices in it!
Did a thread on the Sealine Forum about improvements we made to our S34 and sold it to a chap who had followed on line and appreciated what he was getting. Unfortunately not got round to doing a thread on the extensive work (and expenditure) on our Hardy as we thought it was a keeper - it may still be but recently made the mistake of dropping in on our local Broker…..😳
