Maybe Googler would buy it. He's almost finished his current restoration!
Yeah but I'm the afore mentioned pond life as a buyerMaybe Googler would buy it. He's almost finished his current restoration!
I’d try and flog the boat as it is, but you’ll be dealing with absolute pond life offering you about £2.50.
If you fit the new engine you’ll have to sell the boat for massively more, which will make it much harder to shift unless you do a massive restoration job to get it back to like new. And even then it’s always going to be the boat that sunk unless you rename it and erase its history.
Saying that if my experience of selling a newly new high HP outboard without any rigging as a private seller is anything to go by, that’s gonna be a nightmare to shift as wellwould the dealer take it back?
The dealer would no doubt offer an engine to anyone "at a very good price". Expecting, as a private seller, to be able to sell the engine at more than the dealer charged you is optimistic, to say the least. Not quite sure I agree with you.
If someone wants to re-power their boat then rigging kit and labour costs all have to be taken into account.
If it's an existing honda then the throttle and wiring harness are the same so its just a connection job.
Otherwise the throttle and harness is about £900 which in the big scheme of things when fitting a £15k plus engine are all part of the deal.
I bought then engine at a very good price - so there is margin in it for me and a bargain for the buyer too!
I agree that there are idiots who try it on regarding price but I'm well versed in dealing with them!

Post #256The only flaw in your argument is that you don't know what I paid for it....

"I suspect that there's precious little margin left for the dealer in my case as I'm getting a hefty discount on list price.
I'm getting a reasonable discount as this is one of the last "old style" versions.
Adding the PDI cost locally means it's still a very good deal.
It will be costing me around £13k."
Even if you paid less, you're a private seller, selling an old style engine, expecting to make a profit on it, above what you paid a dealer for it, good luck with that.
I hope it turns out well for youFair enough.
But given that a new one is around £18k then I believe there is a margin, however small.
And, being located in "boat central" i.e. the Hamble, there is a reasonable chance of selling.
I'll update this post when I've sold it, until then, the jury's out.
Good luck with it, if you break even money wise, maybe lose time and effort and a bit of interest on money won't be a bad outcome, but I suspect the best will be just the loss of imagined big bucks profit..
I wish you well.
Just keep this thread going.....show all your work and illustrate with lots of photos....so when you sell, you are not only up front and honest....but you will have this whole diary to reassure, and add value, to the new ownerI can only hope.
Overall I'll be OK as even as a project boat, I'll clear any loss on the new outboard.
With the world in it's current state the market is depressed, I just need a sunny period and the buyers will be out.
It occurred to me far too late in the day that an old fashioned mangle might have removed an awful lot of water from that foam and accelerated the drying process.
Did a thread on the Sealine Forum about improvements we made to our S34 and sold it to a chap who had followed on line and appreciated what he was getting. Unfortunately not got round to doing a thread on the extensive work (and expenditure) on our Hardy as we thought it was a keeper - it may still be but recently made the mistake of dropping in on our local Broker…..Hence why I do threads on my boats. Very handy for prospective buyers to see what’s been done warts and all! Better than a file with a few service invoices in it!
