What state of the tide would you leave Portaferry to best use tidal streams for a passage to Glenarm?

35ft yacht; assumed ave speed of 5.5kn; assuming weather fair.

Hi,
Assuming you’re not going to have wind over tide coming out of Strangford and you have a reasonable engine to push you…. I would leave around an hour before HW and push the the tide a bit to get out of the Lough..this gives you a good tide North, go inside of Copeland Island through Donaghadee Sound. Subject to the wind, once across Belfast bay, go between Hunter Rock and East Maiden.

Glenarm is easy to enter and with their new pontoons on the West side there is plenty of room for visiting yachts.

If your staying the night and want food… a tip is going to the pub (not the one on the end of the street but the one next to it) and they can order a Chinese to be delivered which you can eat inside.

Glenarm is a lovely friendly place with great showers.

Thanks for the speedy and helpful replies. Leaving about an hour before HW makes sense. Thanks for the the other tips inc about the Chinese. Looking forward to exploring Strangford Lough and beyond.

The first time I sailed into Strangford Lough I dutifully flew the Q flag.

The local boatmen came to see me and said that he had been contacted by Customs to tell me take the flag down otherwise they would have to come and check me out.
