Strange attitude of yacht club to potential new members

A

As a matter of interest, why do you think it odd that some members of your club can't turn up at times dictated by the committee but can turn up at times they arrange themselves?

In case I was not clear -I meant that they would always turn up if it was for their benefit
Ie launching their boat but not someone else's. But quite happy to accept help from others
When asked to reciprocate they always have something else on that day !!!!!

That could be a bit mean. As I said, it's the annual working party at Kirkcudbright SC this weekend ... members who can't make it can get a list of jobs needing done and do one (or more) in their own time. Nice solution, reduces wriggle room!

Nah, it's just me being an antisocial bugger. Or, to put a (desperate) positive spin on it, sailing to get away from it all.

Jumble, I think you are exposing your inconsistencies. If you were truly antisocial you wouldn't waste time on the forums communicating with us all.

At my club new members tend to be given ' duties ' like serving toasties etc in the galley on one day of a weekend, probably once a year; this isn't so much a press-gang as an introdution to the members.

After that there are occasional general requests every few months for work parties to sort out brambles in the hedges, paint the clubhouse etc, even after being a member since 1977 I meet new people, and we chat over a cuppa during our break; it isn't slave labour and we enjoy chatting about - and mildly taking the P out of - other members ! :)

D'you mean Fat Olives and No32(or something like that), both places terra incognito to SWMBO and I.:o
The Italian up by Mother Kellys F&C, past the fire station is good, and Boaters over in Thornham marina serves good basic Sunday lunches and other grub.

Tidewaiter,

yes, and those ' posh ' places will remain incognito to me - and I dearly hope SWMBO - even when I win the lottery ! :)

Agree with all of the above, for clarification though; the Michelin starred establishment right opposite Emsworth Slipper Sailing Club (no prices on the menu) is called 36 On The Quay and the Italian up by Mother Kelly's F&C is called Nicolino's. If you're a visiting yachtsman or member of another Club you could always get signed in and eat at Emsworth Sailing Club who have an excellent food offer.

emsworthy,

thanks for the reminders / pointers, though ' 36 On The Quay ' will remain a waypoint on my GPS listed as a bigger hazard than Portland Bill ! :)

The fish n' chippy not far along from the fire station - and excellent little museum - is a wonderful top class emporium, with parking opposite behind the One- Stop or if visiting by boat the Indian restaurant in the town square is pretty good, and there are 3 cafe's there serving excellent breakfasts.

Agree, those two posh places need 'the bones' marker on yer GPS waypoint, death to One's wallet/ platinum card I understand!
That chippy is Mother Kelly's(see above) and the Taste of India is better than the newer one in the old pub on the corner right next door- busy deservedly at weekends-ring ahead!

emsworthy,

ta for that and we might well meet one day - LSC only serves food at weekend lunchtimes.

I remember visiting Bosham SC years ago, when we teenage yobbo's stood at the bar in front of the steward in his immaculate white tunic; " what beers do you have please ? " - well we have X, X and so on, ending with Whitbread Best "

My trusty crew involuntarily replied " Whitbread Best ? That's the worst ! "

" Indeed Sir, it IS the worst ! "

Naw, I think Jumble comes onto the forum to be anti-social.

It's hard to be really anti-social on your own. :)

Which club are you a member of Birdseye? I agree but all clubs suffer from users who do not contribute much, but counteracted by those of us who do.

Exactly. We have had people join with that sort of motivation and then move on a year or two later. We dont want and dont need members like that. We are a social club not a storage space business so we want people who will join in longer term.

If you want a commercial storage space arrangement try a marina or boatyard

Many clubs have limited storage/moorings available and don't need members whose only motivation in joining is to take advantage of those facilities. They would be naturally suspicious of someone who lived a long distance away and was just looking for somewhere cheap to park their boat. A marina is different, it is purely a commercial arrangement.

Absolutely. Like joining a golf club just so that you can park in the car park!

That's fine. Some people, however, might prefer a club which exists to provide cheap facilities on a co-operative basis without much social scene and that sort of club is fine too, isn't it?

Some people join in the purely social life and some dont. But the key thing is that members join in a combined effoirt and dont just parasite ( not a verb but still .... ) on the past efforts of others

About to move Kittiwake from Liverpool to the south coast and investigated several yacht clubs around Portsmouth/Chichester. On asking one of them if they could accommodate Kittiwake for winter storage I was told that I would have to join the club. I told them that I was quite prepared to join if I could be a winter storage space. The response from the berthing officer was "well you have to apply to join first and, if accepted and you become a member, then we can see if there is a space available." When I said that there is no point in joining if I can't keep my boat there he simply said you have to join first! He wouldn't even give an indication as whether it would be likely that a space would be found and definitely could not be deemed to be welcoming.

Obviously they don't need new members.

Completely different attitude at Emsworth and the mooring officer for Chichester conservancy, Adrian Rowe was very helpful. We are now taking up winter storage at Thornham marina, who were very welcoming and friendly.

Perhaps they don't like scousers!:ambivalence:

no-one likes scousers.;)

i cant understand that attitude but yes, it very much exists. i belong to a club who actually treat their members worse than those trying to join.
