Hi,

We have a SHE C32 fitted with a Yanmar YSE12.

Currently, the engine is controlled by two levers, a throttle and a gear lever. To stop the engine, you just back the throttle to nothing and the engine stalls.

This makes switching between forward and reverse a chore as you have to throttle down being careful not to stall, change gear, then throttle up again. A couple of times now I've got it wrong and found myself engineless just when I needed it the most.

What I would like to do is replace it with one of these nice single lever controls which controls both the throttle and the gear change. My question is, how then do I stop the engine? I dug out an old handbook, and that recommends against using the decompressor to stop it as it leaves fuel in the chamber.

I'm sure there's something obvious I'm missing....

Many thanks
Ian

Many throttle controls have a stop that you go down to for idle. For stopping the engine, you release the stop so that you can go the rest of the way. Check the hardware and see if there is an idle stop there or something missing that should be there.

I Have been told you cannot fit a single lever control because it is a crash box. What I did was to mod the lever with a stop in the appropriate place and I need to extract a sprung pin to move the lever to shut off. Hope this helps.

Ive used a YSE8 for 15 years and the only time I had this problem was the very first time I moved the boat.

The problem doesnt lie with the engine or the controls, its operator error!...slow running comes up on the quadrant at the same place every time and you just pull the lever back a bit more to stop the engine!

Adjust your berthing technique to compensate. I just leave the engine at fast tickeover and flick it into gear with my foot, forward or reverse, as appropriate....just forget about crash stops!............GOOD SAILORS DO IT SLOWLY

AND .....this technique makes it look as though you know what your doing !

I think you're probably right. We've only had the boat a few weeks now, and compared to the Leisure 17 it replaced this whole close quarter manouvoring thing scares the life out of me.

I read elsewhere that there should be a detent that it clicks into for tickover, and you push it past that to stop the engine. Perhaps I'll have a fiddle this weekend to see if I can get that working.

Otherwise, I'll be spending the weekend practicing going backwards and forwards......

Thanks
Ian

My Yanmar used to cut off as well ... esp embarrasing when you let anyone new on the controls .. but after an engineer came on board (sic) it won't now stop unless you put arm into engine area and force back the throttle .. a bit dangerous!
BUt you should know how to do this in case the throttle jams open .. which is alarming and sounds expensive

you'll get used to it Ian ..there isnt a detente on the throttle and in time you will be using your heel to tap the throttle back and your toe to throttle up.
