Hi ive joined the ranks of the ex smokers, this time with Zyban. I tried NRT(patches)last year and did ok untill it was time to stop the patches.

Zyban has a six foot list of possible side effects, most of which i have been subjected too during my week on the stuff, if they dont kill me i should be ok.

Any one else still giving up?

Yes, still off the weed after 2 months.

I tried Zyban and didn't sleep for 2 nights. Worse was coming off it after 6 weeks - 1 pint and I was close to hallucinating. Scary stuff.

I packed em in about 20 years ago. Prior to that, as one Scottish friend used to say, I'd have shaved the hairs of your shirt & smoked em. God I was hell to live with for a couple of months though.

The most noticable benefit is that you dont gewt the pain in the wallet & thats a majar amount of cash Gordie Brown won't be getting.

Well done. Keep it up.

Good on you Squidge it's worth all the grief. I gave up 4 years ago after many many attempts. Once you've made up your mind to pack it in you won't need any props. You have to understand that deep inside your head there is a monster that has it's own agenda ( to get as much nicotine as poss.) and it will come up with a thousand and one perfectly good reasons why you can have a fag.
Stick it out you won't regret it.

Ted.

Very pleased to see you all doing so well!. I've never smoked in my life, but SWMBO did till 13 years ago: gave up cold turkey and I didn't even notice for a month! Now her sense of smell is so acute she detects every sip of beer I've had.

Feeling Dejected

I've just had another failed attempt at giving up the weed, patches, changed brands from Nictinell to Niquitin 24 after 4 days I wasn't sleeping more than 30 minutes before I woke up with a mouth as dry as the bottom of the proverbial parrots cage. I dreamed like mad, weired and wonderful dreams most of which resulted in me being killed. I lasted 2 weeks and then gave in.
I'm genuinely pissed off with myself so any help or hints on successs stories would be welcome.

PS
What ticks me off is the guy that says he gave up X years ago but still fancys a fag, wot hope for me I wonder.

Thanks for the support and well done to those who have cracked it. The Boatman, sorry to hear that youve had problems with NRT, when i tried them i removed them at night and replaced them in the morning.Although this didnt stop the" first one of the day" crave it didnt take long for the fresh patch to work.I am taking it a day at a time EG I gave up for the day yesterday and i will give it up for today( seems a little easier that never again! and any way i may wish to take it up again when i am 110 . /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: Feeling Dejected

I tried time and time again using nothing but cold turkey, always the same result, fine for a couple of weeks then couple of beers and then a fag. This time used the Nicquitin C.Q tablets. The origonal taste like cr@p, the new mint flavour taste a little odd at first but I soon got used to them. 5 months now and no problems, I've not had a Nicquitin C.Q in about 4/5 weeks now either and no desire to smoke so hopefully I've cracked it this time, SWMBO gave up at New Year using same method, She also not on the C.Q's anymore. Good luck. Mike.

Re: Feeling Dejected

A few years ago I read a book by Alan Carr called Easy way to stop smoking. I can definitely recommend you have a read as it worked for me and several people I have given the book to as presents. It has no health shocks instead concentrating on the good things about giving up (and they are all good!)

No connection with the author just oh so pleased that I read it.

Good luck

Re: Feeling Dejected

I couldn't get on with this book at all. He rambles on and on about some sort of secret which he will eventually come to and I found his style both irritating and patronising, typical yank method-speak.

I binned it long before he revealed all. Pray tell!

Re: Feeling Dejected

Now how you feel - gave up @ New Year but started again a month ago when drunk etc. Convinced myself that I could have one with a beer and not need one the next morning. Was fine the first time but soon enough (8 days) I was smoking first thing in the morning.

Dissapointed with myself and trying again - 24 hours and counting..

Re: Feeling Dejected

Hmm - just shows you how opinions differ. I didn't read it like that - don't think he's American either!

But...he also has a diet book out which I read a bit of and had the same reaction to as you and chucked it!

There isn't really a secret - you just keep smoking and keep reading and the things he's saying sort of sink in and make sense so by the time you've read the book you're itching to give it a try!

Well, that's how I read it anyhow

It's interesting that a friend who has bought the book won't actually start to read it - almost like she's afraid to give up! I guess it has to be the right time.

Re: Feeling Dejected

It's easy. You have to actually want to stop smoking (not the same as give up).

You have a superficial self which wants to give up smoking, and a deep inside self that likes smoking and wants to go on smoking. If you can believe that, then you have to get the two selves sorted. Then you will just stop. That is what all the cold turkey people have done, and so too the chemically assisted, only they needed a psychological (NOT physical) prop to help them do it.

If you really don't WANT to stop smoking, you shouldn't try.

If yoiu really would like to WANT to stop, go to a hospital where they can show you some of the effects, including the path lab. I would GUARANTEE you will want to stop and will need nothing to help.
