Stoopid boat owners ?

goodness gracious, that was fun, wasn't it !

A worthwhile wander through his links as well. Memo to self: reconsider engine ventilation.....

Good spot - makes hair raising reading. Some of the findings are truly astonishing. I particularly like the skin fitting with no seacock and a cork stuck in the end of a pipe!

Bet you've seen a few of those Paul.

I certainly have paul especially some old brooms and project 31s, older Birchwoods with diy owners that shop at Halfords for all there boaty electrical needs!!, oh and Moonrakers with bits of wire hanging everywhere, banks of batteries laying in bilgewater in the middle of 2 engines, yes ive seen it all!!

Thought so lol

Some of them reminded me of my Princess 32, when i bought it :(

The photos of the battery installations remind me of a badly fitted pair of batteries I had fitted by a boatyard in Guernsey where I paid for 2 new batteries to be fitted to my boat. They were much higher than the originals and I expressed my concern that they would "fall over" but I was assured that they would not. Anyway they did halfway between Lands End and Cork. Immediately next to the batteries was the diesel tank. A battery had leant against the diesel tank and the battery lugs had welded themselves to the tank creating a short which stopped all the boats electrics from working, including the Ship to Shore Radio. When the battery was prised off the tank one of the lugs had eaten a hole in the tank and a steady stream of diesel cascaded into the bilges. Fortunately the engine was running and when the battery was prised off the electrics came back on including the VHF and we were able to make it to Dunmore East. As soon as we tied up I turned the engine off and tried to re-start it again, both batteries dead.
So had our engine not been running, we would have been without electrics, batteries shot with no charge, miles from anywhere, no VHF, with only our Flares for support.
