When my ACR came up for its second battery it was cheaper to buy a PLB, with GPS, than to rebattery.
Only drawbacks compared to an EPIRB, endurance only 24 instead of 48 hours and you have to deploy the aerial and manually press a button.
I think that you'll find, due to IMO requirements, most EPIRBs are not for user-maintenance, though PLBs do have this facility.

I've almost committed to McMurdo G5 with user changeable batteries. I'll also consider some PLB's for deck work at night...

Too much moolah involved but what price our safety...?
