Standing rigging replacement

Last night speaking to someone who just replaced his standing rigging on a 2017 Bene- question is for a non racing boat how much might replacement cost and if you do it any changes which should be made in terms of gauge or quality ?

Cost will depend a lot on the boat size and rig type.

DIY works out cheaper that getting a pro rigger to do it for you and isn't a difficult job.

I've used them in the past and would do so again.

The 2017 Bene 8 years old should be ok for rigging for a few more years certainly 15 at the most or you may feel more comfortable sooner. It is cheapest done by you removing each wire and getting like for like replacement. Turnscrews etc should have a much longer safe life. ol'will

I gathered the work was done by XM rigging at Haslar . Boat is about 45ft - I think the owner races so I guess more strain than we as strictly crusing moody 41 would live with . I don’t think we would replace for another 5 years which would be 15 years usage.

Our 30 ft, with ‘c9m0lex needs’ in modern parlance, was just under 2k for all the wire, made up, and fitted by us. Including stuff that you halfmaran sailors don’t have at all, waterstays and mast diamonds. It’s very reasonable to do it that way, no reason to put it off and increase your risk of failure. If ypu ever have a mast come down, you’ll never skimp here again.

I’d guess £2k DIY, £3.5k and upwards for a pro job.

I DIY-ed mine, less than half the cost of pro-job, but admittedly my mast did nearly fall down a few months later.

1980 33 foot cruiser racer, single spreader, 7mm all round, bar the back stay at 5mm. ~£1500 diy March 2025.

If 45 ft a LOT more than the £2K - £3.5K suggested above. But why replace if 2017 age. Even many surveyors will regard 12 years as a sensible life if checked regularly and not very hard raced or ultra-long-distance usage.

Thank you -my suspicion it was 3-4k but I have no intention of replacing in short term -clearly if we were setting sail for the Med or suchlike different viewpoint . Likewise we don’t want to end up looking like the wooden mast below though which I guess will be a pricier repair.

Depends where you ask. South coast premium rates apply. The rest of us pay less. Hence why I said £3.5k AND UPWARDS.

As discussed, cost varies massively with boat size, spec, and how much of the rig you're replacing.

My experience so far:
2010, 27ft boat with 5mm stays- £450 like for like replacement inc turnbuckles, fitted DIY
2021, 39ft boat with 8mm stays- £1300 for a mast-up re-rig using over length stays with a stalok on one end. DIY. Reused turnbuckles.
2025, 47ft with 10mm stays, replacing everything, staloks throughout, DIY... haven't done it yet but it's easily going to cost me £5k.

It's amazing how much the price escalates with size. My current boat also has twin spreaders and a cutter stay so there are more fittings and more wire.

What happened?

Cotter pin failed - I’ll never know why as it pinged over the side in all the excitement. Keel stepped mast saved me.

£5k-£7k for the lot to be done by a proper rigging company (Martin Leaming, Allspars, etc.) for a 45-50fter.

That includes craning the mast on and off.

I've had a fag packet estimate by a reputable rigging firm of £4k for a 38 foot Benny Oceanis.

I might just ask JTR for a quote along with XM rigging which probably exhausts those in Gosport although port Solent isn’t that far I guess for riggers.
