If I recall it correctly, there are some special regulations/requirements for your VHF when you want to use it on the inland waters. You need one to hail bridges and or port ops.
I think this function is called ATIS and your VHF needs to be switchable into ATIS mode with the correct channels. You also need to have your SRC license with you.

i have a non DSC vhf & hardly had cause to use it in 6 weeks there this summer.
