Can't think of a name for it, but here's what I want it to do.

I want to attach a fitting to a couple of cockpit stanchions so I can insert poles into them to support a cockpit cover for use at anchor.
Anyone doing this, or got any ideas?

You could just lash the poles to the stanchions?
Or tyrap some bigger tubing (plastic waste pipe?) alongside the stachion.
Is there anything sold as a fishing rod holder that would do it?
Depends whether you want a sunshade or something for an
Engish Summer!

You can use plastic double tube saddles. They look like figure of eights with a nut and bolt through the centre and are basically clamps for running plumbing work neatly. One half will clamp around the stanchion and the other onto a suitably sized piece of tube to take the cover poles. Local plumbers should stock them. (Change the nut and bolt for stainless before fitting!)

For a quick and dirty (aka cheap) solution try the sort of 1/2 inch plastic waterpipe that glues together. The T fittings can be slotted to fit over the top wire running between stanchions and the straight stuff will bend upwards to form a hoop. The cover is fitted with pockets (open at both ends) to slide over the hoops and the whole is tensioned and positioned using terylene line. The great thing about it is that it pulls to bits quickly and can be stowed away.
